So it seems they have revamped the existing lineup and from
what I have read there have been many changes. I have a few
questions before I make a purchase and would greatly value
any input.

The review I read stated they played louder and had better
bass.

1 - Has anyone experienced both sets and can state the differences
if any?
2 - Will these speakers work with my Sony STR-DA2ES, it is a 8/4 ohm
system via selector switch. Will I be straining the amp?
3- I have read reports of the 2011 model not getting loud enough is this
true? Is this due to inferior amps not able to handle the output?

I have found last years model on sell with some serious rebates and it
seems they are clearing out for the newer models. God I hate this as the
sell is about to run out and after hearing Andrew on This Week In Home
Theater I am torn. I just wonder if it will be that big of a differernce. I am also
slightly hesistent about the new look. At first I was unsure about the older model
but after seeing the new ones I prefer the other look. I was almost ready to pull
the trigger until he said how much he redid them of course I have only seen
one review so far on CNET from Steve Guttenburg. I was hoping that some of the
forum members have audtioned or had a chance to listen to them.

Thanks and sorry for rambling!

The Phase 2 speakers have better bass, better midrange, better treble > and better
imaging and soundstage presentation.

When you say Phase 2 you mean the newest model. Have you had a listening session with these?

After reading some old threads about rebadged Sony ES Receivers I am getting
concerned, I wonder if this unit will be able to maximize these speakers. Any
input?

Are you sure about your model number, I can not find ant info.
Also, what is the size of your listening area?

I have recommended the older model Pioneers to several neighbors who work at Best Buy and got a discount, and I spent time with them and they were great sounding speakers for the money. If the new version is an improvement, well, when these things are on sale they are a bargain (even when not on sale they are a bargain).

Good to hear your thoughts on them.

Why is your receiver considered "rebadged"?

The Sony ES receivers were pretty well regarded. This one has 2 sets of multichannel inputs, pretty cool. It is the entry level Sony receivers that underperform.

You should be fine with the Pioneer speakers.

Thanks and sorry for rambling!

I have owned both generations and can speak to the differences I've noticed. I bought the SPC21 center with the intention of using it as an LCR system if I liked it. I liked it well enough, but the height of it as a center was too high. It blocked the bottom 3" or so of my KURO plasma, soooo back it went. I learned then that Andrew Jones had been busy doing a revision 2 of the system, addressing shortcomings and listener feedback for certain changes ( shorter-sitting center, more traditional speaker grills among them). So, I ordered the SPC22 sight unseen and have been putting it through its paces. Short answer? All the changes made to the new center have been improvements in my book. I was dubious when Pioneer said they'd have smaller drivers but would have lower bass extension, but darned if they Andrew didn't pull it off! Further, they redesigned the tweeter, and it's probably the first thing you notice about it - if you've heard the 2011 model to contrast it against. The new tweeter has more presence at the higher frequencies. I haven't measured it (I don't have that training or equipment), but the good ole auditory sensor Mark 1 thinks the SPC22 makes the SPC21 sound positively muddy by comparison!

I'm debating my original theory about going with an LCR system of the SPC22, now that I've heard the bass extension on the new floorstander. Very impressive (for 2-channel music without a sub), and I'm thinking about auditioning them soon to see how they fare.

Your Sony STR-DA2ES will be more than qualified to run these fine speakers.

Have at it.

I recommend buying from a reseller with a liberal return policy (I did Best Buy because that's where I found them first, to be honest).

I hope I haven't muddied the water!

Irishman,

You have devistated me forever, I ordered the 2011 this morning and now I will
be forever wondering how much better I could have had it. I appreciate your
input thanks for the detailed description. hehehe

I think I will be happy for a while since I am coming from 10 year old Sony Bookshelfs and a cheap center, surround
sound Sony setup. I got a really good deal on the 2011 model 168.00 for the
floorstanders and center. Maybe I can upgrade down the rode but I am not sure
if it will be that much of a difference. At least to my untrained ear. Or let me put it
this way not a big of a difference as what I am coming from. And actually I didn't
like the look of the 2011 when I first saw them but after looking at them in person
they grow on you. The 2012 don't appeal to me, now if I was a naked speaker user
that would be different.
