I have been wanting to upgrade my living room speakers from desktop speakers to something better. I have been reading up on the under $1k bookshelf speakers and have found a few options. What do you guys think of my choices below? It has be a bookshelf unfortunately due to its higher wife acceptance factor. The speakers will be in a medium size room 2500 cubic ft. where half of one wall opens into another medium size room.

My choices in order of preference are:

1. The Clue - It can placed within 2 inches of the back wall.

2. Dynaudio speakers (Dynaudio BM 6A MKII) - nearfield so not sure if it work.

3. Paradigm Studio 20

My amp is an old Marantz 5.1 reciever 100 watts/channel so should be adequate. Which ones do you guys think is best? any other recommendations? Budget is $1k

My recommendation would be to first see about adding a pair of, at minimum, 10" subs (smooth, tight bass) and then decide if you need a speaker upgrade or what your upgrade path should be.

My opinion, the center channel is the most important speaker, this being quickly followed by one's choice in subwoofers.

In your case, you already have a set of speakers but no subs.

Thanks guys, I'll be doing more reading up on your suggestions. I have gone to BB a few times to audition their speakers, not sure if it is their setup but wasn't too impressed with their speakers, B&W and Energy. Not even close to my mid price headphones, Hifiman HE500 or my previously owned Audeze LCD-2. Not sure if it was their setup but it didn't have the clarity I was looking for, lots of mushy sounding bass with ok clarity across the spectrum.

Good luck finding speakers that can match $700 headphones at pretty much any price... Your room, and the typical less then ideal placement in said room have WAY to much influence for that to happen.

^^^

And it's a shame as that's a fact. Currently listening to the cable TV with a pair of Sennheiser, HDR-180.

And good bass from a sub of near that quality will pretty much take all of your $1K budget.
