Hi guys, new to the forum.
I recently bought a pair of the infinity p363's at frys. I know they're not the best but for 200 bucks...they sound and look amazing. I bought another one for the center seeing as I don't have much money and have a nice big Hitachi projection HDTV to set it on top of. My question is am I getting the best sound using this tower sitting sideways on top of my Tv? Or would there be a huge difference in buying the actual primus center? I would hate to spend 200 on the center where I could spend that on another pair for surrounds.
I mainly ask because I have nothing to compare it to as my previous center was a small onkyo htib speaker...so I don't know what an actual real center sounds like.
I do know watching cabin in the woods there were scenes where those woofers were MOVING!
Looking forward to your feedback. Thanks

Using a identical tower as a center is actually better than using a regular center, from a performance perspective. Check out this article for a more technical explanation of why. Horizontal center speakers are a compromise in performance for the sake of placement accommodation, because vertical speakers are usually too awkwardly shaped for most entertainment systems. If you don't have to live with that compromise, then you certainly should not. If I had the space for it, I would be using a tower as well.

No, due to the reasons noted in the link in the post above. Drivers aren't arranged vertically just because it looks good that way, it's because they work better that way.

The Infinity tower was designed/engineered to stand-up - and this brings the best sound.

Lol, I somehow missed the part about using it sideways. Yeah, it definitely isn't built for that.

Thanks for the replies, but I'm still confused...it's ideal to use the same speaker but not to lay it sideways? In what scenario would one be able to stand up a tower to use as a center short of standing it in front of the tv?

That's it. If you have a projector and screen you can put three towers behind the screen. If you have a flat screen mounted on the wall and no console below the TV, you can put a tower speaker under the TV as a center.

From everything I've read here, three identical speakers arranged vertically is the best set-up, if you can do it.

TV mounted on the wall just above the centre tower or all three speakers behind an acoustically transparent screen.

Do you want to use the same driver sizes? If not you can use the PC251 with 5 1/4" drivers for the center and two P153 bookshelfs for surrounds.

You can use a primus bookshelf for the center as well but the tweeter will end up being far left or right if placed horizontally. Not sure how that would sound since I haven't tried it. Nice speakers.
