As the title suggests, I am building a new vacation home and am planning for a theater. I am planning for a dedicated theater that will be a big step up from my current system (implemented in 2001). The projector and screen are more or less sorted out (runco ls5 and Stewart), but finding speakers is proving to be quite challenging.

My current speaker setup:
LR: Kef Q652
C: Kef reference model 100
Rear surrounds = Q352
Ceiling = some generic Kefs
Sub = Reel SW10
This system was installed in 2001 by the AV gear my builder used...I didn't know better at the time.

So now I am trying to do it correctly in my new home.

I am currently looking into doing some Energy Veritas 6.3 along with a velodyne, but am not sure if this system will be a big step up from what I currently have.

Any other options for around ~3-7k for just the speakers?
Should I be looking for reference speakers?

BTW the room is around 3000 cubic ft.

Thanks any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I think Velodyne subs are generally over priced. The best bargains for price/performance are the Internet direct subwoofer vendors: HSU, SVS, Outlaw Audio, Rythmik, and Epik. You'll want to research and ask questions about them on the AVS subwoofer forum.

Alright, thanks.
I am not too worried about the sub.
Can someone please comment on the rest of the speakers?

I read some reviews of the energy veritas 6.3 and am not convinced. The klipsch rf7ii's were another option, but the love'em or hate'em attitude on this forum is leading me to look into other options for a 7.1 or 7.2 setup (currently not planning to do AT setup).

So, right now I am investigating the following systems:
Atlantic technologies 6200/8200

Jtr triple 8 (the matching surrounds look weird in that they do not have a curved face for wider dispersion)

Others???

Keeping in mind that these speakers will be used 100% for movies/sports, which speakers would give me a nice upgrade from my current Kef system while still coming in around or under 7k?

Would that be Reel Acoustics by chance? If so, I assume you don't live in the US? Where are you located? That info will probably make quite a bit of difference in regards to the suggestions you get. Some of the more popular choices may not be available where you are.

If you take yourself too seriously expect me to do the exact opposite

I actually am in the US. My installer just slapped together a system 10 years ago with no input from me.

I'm a Klipsch kind of guy and my recommendation would be for a Reference Series set of speakers and an outboard Amp such as an Emotiva, XPA-5.

Shopping around for matching B-Stock, one can find much better pricing than Klipsch's list price.

Now that's strange; Reel is not available in the US. You have a one-of-a-kind subwoofer it seems. smile.gif

If you can still find Energy Veritas, I'd give them a listen. I like my setup very much.

I have Veritas 6.3's as my fronts, a 5.2 for the center, V-S 's for side surrounds and 5.1's for the rear surrounds. I am using two Def Tech subs. I upgraded from some mis-matched Infinity's that are pretty old. The fronts were circa 1988 or so.

For me, in my room, the difference was pretty substantial. The Energy's are very smooth. I don't find them bright at all, but my Infinity's had the famous EMIT tweeter, so I may be used to a bit more forward sound.

In my room, which is 21x15x8, open one side in a split-level to the kitchen and living room, the speakers fill the room nicely.

I"m running a Marantz SR6006 with a Emotiva XPA3 driving the front stage.

I will try to demo the energy veritas and klipsch reference speakers. Are there any other setups besides the energy veritas, klipsch ref, Atlantic tech 6200, and JTR triple 8s that are considered quality HT speakers under 7k?
