I'm in the market for a pair of tower speakers up to $1500, obviously speaker selection is subjective but hopefully after I explain what I'm looking for it will make this thread slightly manageable. I will be using the speakers for music at this point, with surround sound coming at a later date. I'm looking for speakers that are accurate, and have decent bass output (if a subwoofer is needed to supplement that is fine). From my research I've been looking into the Cerwin Vega xls-215, Polk Lsi 15, EMP Tek E55Ti, and Klipsch RF-82 II.

Some to check out

Aperion Versus Forte

Anthony Gallo CL-3

Tekton Design Lore.

I haven't heard them yet, but they all look promising and would be on my list in your price range.

I like Kef too:

These are on a great sale. For this price you can add a very nice subwoofer:

I dont think I've ever heard anyone call Cerwin Vega an accurate speaker. Good party speaker though.

Sorry bout the confusion there, the Cerwin Vegas I mainly looked into for their bass response, my dad has had a pair of Vegas for 30 years or so and they sound nice so I have been considering them, but that's why I'm here, research can only take you so far so I wanted to get the opinions of people who actually have more of an idea about the subject.

I would look at RTi a9's over the LSi's if you're planning on expanding to surround in the future. I'm not even sure you can find a LSiC right now. The Emp Tek's look like a knock off of the Rti's, and they are solid performers. The RTi a9 is about 2.5db higher sensitivity, with a true 10hz deeper bass extension, so the extra money is buying you something useful.

Edit: The Wharfedale Evo also brings up the question of problems adding a center in the future. The Diamond 10.7 is a very good choice still.

I can vouch for the Polk RTi A9. Recently got them and have been impressed with them for both music and HT. I also like the JBL L890 and the Aperion Versus Forte.

I am looking at towers as well, if accurate is important here are some brands I am considering in the $800-&1500 range. The bass will vary among the models but a subwoofer will probably be in your future irregardless if you eventually are going to be adding surrounds etc. The internet direct brands may be great but few are reviewed by anyone but owners. Salk Song Towers QWT and a few others are the exception but above your budget. Of course you will hear it repeated often, audition, audition, audition as many models as you can. Good luck!
KEF Q500, Q700, Q900 and include the older iQ90 still in production at a great price.
PSB Image Series T5
Monitor Audio Silver RX6
NHT Absolute Tower

As far as I am concerned, the speaker that is unbeatable for under $1500 is the PSB Image T6 ($1200 / pair).

I had them for two years, and never heard a thing I didn't like.

I decided to buy some more expensive speakers recently, but in that price range they are IMO the best you can get.

Another very good speaker is the KEF iQ90.

I consider both of them better-sounding than the ones you named in your first post, but we all have different tastes.

If you could go $1700, the Gallo Acoustics CL-3 is well worth the price; an excellent speaker!! (that's what I have now...lol).

Thanks for all the replies, I just got back from Fry's and got to hear the RTi A9's and the Klipsch RF-82 II's, in my opinion the Polk's definitely won between those two. They had the Lsi 15's but they weren't set up so I wasn't able to audition them. I'm trying to find some other places with speakers on display but best buy is the only other one I can think of and all I saw there were B&W. Any recommendations on places to go for auditioning some speakers?

Paradigm, PSB, KEF, B&W, Monitor Audio are all good. Go to their websites and lookup some local dealers.

For brand new, I'd check out Revel F12 and KEF Q900 for $1300/pr delivered.

For used, the Dynaudio X32 for $1400/pr delivered if excellent like-new condition or Focal 826v for $1500/pr delivered in excellent condition.

Here is a Revel F12 in excellent condition for $600.

Here is an excellent condition demo from a dealer w/ full warranty asking for $1000, but you could offer $800 delivered.

I've been looking at the KEF's based off of all of the recommendations I've received, but where can I get them for $1300 delivered? the closest I can find is around $1600.

You need that Acudeftechguy to send you a pm. Apparently he has ways. I'd make sure it includes a USA warranty, though.

accessories4less for the Q900's???

I"m in the same boat. About to sell my Energy C500/C100/CC100/PA-120 setup and find something else as my new living room will be about 4,000 cu.ft and open (ahh...brand spakin new house! biggrin.gif). It's VERY hard to demo down here in Oklahoma as all you can find is B&W, Klipsch (of course) and Paradigm. I'd really like to hear the KEF q's and the Monitor Audio RX6/RX8's. Those EMP e55ti towers sparked my interest yesterday too as they were only $675/pr and look like a copy of the RTi A9's....there's just nobody that has really reviewed or heard them yet. They do have a free trail in-home though!

Ya I'm in the Dallas area and I can't find anywhere either =/ And I wish I could hear those EMP's because they look so clean and at the price point I could add a nice sub, but it seems like they might be a hit or miss. I figured going with the brands that are more well known would be a safer route to take.
And the Q900's on that site are out of stock and that usually means they wont ever be in stock again in my experience =/

You can get a great deal on KEFs from vanns in their clearance section. The speakers are returns, refurbs and floor models. The inventory constantly changes so you need to check often. I recently bought a pair of floor model xq30's for $1100. MSRP was $3,000, although no one in their right mind would ever pay MSRP. They look brand new to me.

B-stock, Klipsch, RF-7 II's. A few dollars more than your stated budget by a hundred dollars but my opinion, money well spent.

I found the Q900's open box for $630 each so I'm torn between those and the RTi A9's because I can get those refurbished directly from Polk for $500 each. I'll need to find some place to audition the Q900's to see if they sound better to me or not. Any thoughts on the comparison between those two speakers?

Just my opinion but I have owned Polk RTi series speakers and I personally prefer the Kef speakers. But everyone is different so there listening is important. That is a great deal on both speakers for the price.

Well your opinion is what I'm looking for so thanks =D and that is exactly why I'm trying to find somewhere to audition the Q900's in my area right now. I'm just curious if there is a $260 difference, but if the KEF's are obviously higher quality then I don't mind spending a couple hundred more for a better product. I plan on keeping these for quite some time so I want to get it right the first time, these are going to be my first speaker purchase so I'm doing as much research as I can to make sure I make the right decision.eek.gif

Man those Revel f12 are almost being given away..
Funny I thought he should get use when I read the post, it's a great way to hear speaker at your own room/space without too much hassle or thinking you only have 30 day to return them, and that price he can easily break even.

I don't think one can objectively say the Q900 is higher quality. The A9 actually measures better...

Well hopefully I will be able audition the Q900's soon, I was very impressed with the RTi A9's when I heard them though so I don't really expect that the Q900's will be a $260 difference, but I would still like to hear them to see for myself.
