i've been reading that the HTM61 is crappy. i dont know if this is true or not, and my local dealer doesnt have one to demo, but it's got me spooked.

i'm looking to buy 684s for right/left front, and DS3s for surrounds and the ASW610 for sub.

so, what should i be looking to get for a center that won't screw up the rest of my system?

or should i bail on B&W and go for something comparable? budget is $3-5K for a 5.1 speakers.

Of course you should bail. You have better options even in the B&W line! CM9 + CMC2 + CM1.

out of curiosity...with that wonderful a budget, why step anywhere near the overpriced B&W's.
You have so many better choices....way way better that what u have picked

around the same price, the PSB T6.....Dali Icon 6 are any day a hands down choice over the B&W 684.
and for subwoofer dont see anyreason to look at anything apart from the likes of rythmik, hsu, svs, outlaw

suggest you keep around 1000 - 1500 for fronts. Get its matching center as recommended. Get a pair of subs.
A decent pair of surrounds would do. Put most of your money into fronts and subs.

my choice would be PBS synchrony series and a pair of sealed rythmik or hus subs.

here are some terrific speakers for the money

oh yeah, forgot about hsu subs. i owned one like 10 years ago, and i liked it.

on the fronts - so many choices it makes my head hurt. i own a pair of B&W bookshelf speakers and i really like them, which is why i thought B&W would be good for the HT setup.

i listened to some paradigm bookshelf speakers and compared them with the B&W, and the B&W sounded noticeably better to me. didnt listen to the paradigm towers.

btw, the PSB two looks like it's been discontinued.

....
its just that the price you would pay for B&W models like 684, the same price would fetch you better speakers. The EMP tek is a wonderful speaker for the money.

It's not that the HTM61 sucks it just seems to have a narrower sweet spot. It may not even be noticeable to you. That being said, a single 685 would be superior. Also, if you do decide on the 600 series I would go with the 683s rather than 684s. In fact, I would prefer the 685s with a nice subwoofer to the 684s.

You have a decent budget. I agree with Brian. The CM series would be a better bet and you could pair your 5.0 with a Rythmik, HSU, or SVS research subwoofer.

There are also a lot of other great choices out there. If I had that budget I'd go with the Sierra Towers from Ascend Acoustics but that's just me. The aforementioned PSB T6 towers are a good choice. You might consider the KEF Q900s, Monitor series, or Salk Sound Towers as well just to name a few. You'd definitely save some cash in the process too.

You can also get aperion verus grand towers ( minus their sub) - their center channel is great. If you don;t like them, return them back - no money lost

Thx
