So I have received some great advice from people on this forum about speaker recommendations. However, after going to look at spealers in person the Pioneers are too big and won't pass the wife test. I need something smaller for my 15x15 room. Have the receiver, have the sub. I need 4 speakers for front LR and rear surrounds. Looking at the Polk Monitor 30(x4) and maybe the CS1. What do you all think? I am also now leaning back to the Energy Take 5's. Any other suggestions? Like I said, the Pioneers are just too big, so anything that big is out. The Monitor 40's are even pushing it. Rears will be wall mounted. Front LR will be placed on/in bookshelves. Center will be on a shelf above the fireplace.

Your pretty much spot on with what you suggested to yourself there. Monitor 30s' are pretty decent speakers. CS1 is a GREAT little center channel speaker (I own one, paired with my Paradigm's).

Would a boxed system like the mlt-2 which can be bought for $300 on sale be better?

My guess is that the Polk M30s and CS1 across the front will sound better than the Energy Take classic or the ML MLT-2s, but I haven't heard the takes or the MLT...the Polks are a good speaeker for the money! Speaking of the Pioneers, couldn't you get 4 of the smaller bookshelf (Pioneer SP-BS21-LR Bookshelf )? $79 dollars a pair right now...

the Polk Monitor 30s are nearly the same size as the Pioneers BTW. how small of a speaker do you need? Is the 1.5 inches in height that large of an issue?

polk Monitor 30s
11" x 7" x 8.38"

Pioneer BS21
7.1" x 12.6" x 8.1

Okay, I guess I assume you were talking about the Pioneer towers...I think the Polk M30s are as good or better than the Pioneers, but you won't get them anywhere near $49.00/pr! That is a great price....

I was going to recomment the NHT SuperZero 2.0 @99 each but you'd still need a center.
http://www.nhthifi.com/Bookshelf-speaker-SuperZero-2-0?sc=12&category=5060

At 9" tall are they too big for your needs also?

Maybe the Polk M30's are your best bet.

no worries there... the lows , however... You will want a sub, but you can add it later, as funds allow, and it does not have to be a 'matching' brand.

I already have a sub (bic F12 which is AMAZING!). My budget just went up to around $500 according to the wife (have her one my phone as a recording so I can lock her into it!wink.gif)!

Would you do the Superzero's over the Monitors?

myself? I'd get the polks. Actually, I did get polks. Monitor 70's for fronts, a CS2 center, and 50's for rears. Upgraded to a full HSU set-up since.
But I thought it was more about getting small speakers, for your situation. IF I had to base it solely on size, I'd get the smaller ones. Although my set now is considerably smaller than the Polk set was (except for the center), the sound quality is much better... to me. Their speakers are 15" tall, and would not fit your budget, unless you went for the front 3 only ... and even then shipping and Canadian duties/fees probably wouldn't work. Maybe if you had a 'friend' across the border... smile.gif

Would you do the Superzero's over the Monitors?

Yes - due to their good midrange and treble.

Just over your budget a little, but my choice would be Cambridge Audio S30s for front, S50 center, and S20s for rear.

Jim Z may know if there are any better prices on these that get them down to $500.

to be fair, I've never heard the NHT's, but I have seen plenty of people that are happy with them. I only jumped in at the 'what's the best matching center..." . And obviously, I wasn't entirely happy with the Polk set I had... That set made me want a real sub, vs the one from an Onkyo HTIB I'd been using, and when I got my HSU sub, I was so impressed I got their speakers. No regrets, either. Oh yeah... then I got a second sub. rolleyes.gif

Wont the V-minis be over your budget? At $120 each you can only get 4 for $500. Then you'd still need a center speaker.

I have the Polk M30's for fronts and a CS1 for a front. The CS1 has 2 5.25" speakers vs. 1 in the M30, the center speaker handles much of the dialogue so the extra speaker should help. I am building piece by piece with the idea of eventually getting towers for the fronts (Polk M60s) then moving the M30s to the rear. As for a sub my latest addition was an Energy S10.3, often mentioned in comparison to the F12. Currently I am pretty happy with my current 3.1 setup, it can get plenty loud, loud enough I can only crank it up when I am the only one home. +1 for the Polks.
