Hey I need some advice on which speakers I should get, it will be my first ever floorstanding speakers and I want a quality one that will sound great for all music and last long as well.

I had my mind set on the Polk Audio Monitor 70 Series II's but then I kept reading up on the Pioneer FS52/FS51's which are cheaper and someone even said it is even better than the Polks. Any opinions on which one I should get?

I am solely using the pair of floorstanding speakers for music in a small room. No movie watching, TV, or anything else.

I will also be using a Denon AVR 1612 receiver to power them (Should I jump on the Denon AVR 1712 for $70 more? Or is the AVR 1612 sufficient enough? Worth it?). Again, only powering the pair of floorstanding speakers, there will be no subs, bookshelves, centers, or anything else.

Thanks for the help!

Like you said. Some people like the Pioneer sound, some the Polk sound. The only way you can make the call on this with certainty is to listen to each.

The differences in power output will be negligible between the 1612 and the 1712. You have to double the power output to achieve 3db more volume. Not that much of a difference.

The good news is that you should be able to compare these two at any Best Buy.

Just be sure to adjust the volume settings for a more accurate A/B since the Polk is more efficient there is a natural tendency to think the louder speaker sounds better.

Good point. BestBuy doesn't carry the Monitor series. They have the TSI series which was a cosmetic upgrade to the Monitors. Sound is virtually the same.

And take your own source material. A couple CDs with different kinds of music.

Thanks, I'll stick with the 1612 then.

I had a chance to demo the Pioneer FS52 and Polk Audio TSi300 at Best Buy. I found both of them very decent with a little more liking to the Pioneers. But what I want is the Monitor 70s which is essentially the TSi500 which is 2 steps up from the TSi300/Monitor 50s. So I would assume that the TSi500/Monitor 70 would definitely beat out the Pioneers when the TSi300/Monitor 50 was already almost as good as the Pioneers in my opinion.

Any thoughts/opinions from anyone with experience hearing both the TSi500/Monitor 70 and Pioneer FS52/FS51?

Edit: They only had the TSi300, so I could not demo the TSi500.

Your thinking is right. I don't think you have to worry about your choice.

But if you want to know for sure about the improvement in SQ of the M70s over the TSi300s, ask in the Polk Owners Thread.

Best Buy carries the Pioneer FS52 and the Polk Tsi500 which is essentially a Monitor 70 in a newer cabinet. Take some music with you and listen to both speakers. You'll get different opinions on which is better so its best you make this decision yourself. If they don't have any Tsi500 they should carry the TSi400 which is the Monitor 60 equivalent.

What are you connecting to your receiver for audio? If no digital devices and you're sure you never plan to add any speakers or sub later you might to go with a stereo receiver to save a little money.

If potentially you will use with video devices and home theatre then get the 1612 or 1712.

The Best Buy here only had the TSi300 but no TSi500 when I looked around or else I would have demoed the TSi500 for sure.

I have an iPod dock called the Pure i20 which takes the iPod's raw digital audio and runs it through the Pure i20's DAC which is superior to the iPod's DAC. Then the Pure i20 will go into the Denon 1612 then to the speakers.

I wanted either the 1612 or 1712 because of the Audyssey software that comes with it which I hear can automatically setup/calibrate itself to my room, listening position, etc. which I found really cool cause I'd suck doing it manually.

if youre using the receiver for music only i dont think you even need audyssey. why not get the 1312 for cheaper?

or even cheaper option why not go with a stereo only receiver like the sherwood 4109?

I found a Refurbished Denon 1612 for $200 which is a great price that is close to those entry level receivers so that's why I decided on that.

Just to confuse things smile.gif

The Polk RTi8s are $188.50 + shipping at Frys. So for a little more than the Monitor70s, you can step up to the next Polk speaker line.

Wow, that's a good find. Now I don't know what to get for my uses. I kind of want the cherry finish though. confused.gif

Newegg has the Polk 60 on sale for $99 right now. Are they worth getting than the Pioneer FS52?

If you like the Polk sound better they are. But as was advised to others in this thread go to Best Buy and listen to some Polk towers vs the FS52 speakers first. Then decide which one you like better.

The Polks will play louder at the same volume.

So 2 days ago I bought the monitor 60 towers from Newegg for $200. Today I see that Newegg has the monitor 70 towers for $150 each. I refused delivery of the monitor 60 towers today and bought the monitor 70 towers for $285 including free shipping... Hopefully this was the right decision. I have never refused a delivery before so I am not sure how that works...

I have both the 60's and the 70's and like both well enough for what they are, but there is a reason why my 70's are in my primary theater and my 60's are in my secondary bedroom system. wink.gif

Good call jumping on the 70's for the current sale price. I think you will be pleased with what they offer vs the price you paid for them!

I don't need snobs to tell me how to think, thank you!

So how does the refusal of delivery work in terms of getting refunded? I have never done that before.

I don't know, I've never done it before. I'm assuming you just tell the delivery guy you don't want the package. I would guess that several days later, maybe a week or more, the package is returned and processed back into inventory and your credit card is credited for the amount spent.

You could always call the seller and ask them. Newegg is a good company to deal with in my experience.

+1

I did a refusal from newegg once. When the driver shows up for delivery, just refuse the shipment. Once it arrives back at the egg, they credit the account.

They actually did one better for me. I had a CS1 delivered. Unopened, I returned it for the CS2, they didn't even charge me a restocking fee.

Lol, I just saw this thread is a year old. And by the avatar, you can see which way the OP made his decision.

Everything worked out so far. Newegg credited my account with the cost of the polk 60's and I have the 70's hooked up along with the pioneer Andrew Jones center speaker and BS22 rear speakers through the pioneer elite vsx 42 receiver. Only issue now is that I can't get any sound through the rear speakers...

The Pios are decent speakers and they sound good, but when I auditioned them with the Polk Audios TSi500, I found that I had to crank the volume more than the Polk. I took my wife with me, and even she liked the sound of the Polk better. However, if I had the option to buy the Pioneer FS52's for $77 each or the Polk Audio Monitor 70 series II for $149.99 each, I would definitely go with the Pioneers.

The Polk Audios have more bass due to having 4 x 6.5 woofer compare to the Pioneer 3 x 5.25 woofers. Plus the Polks have higher sensitivity. So, if you are going to use a subwoofer, I would suggest the Pios so you can save some $$ and buy the best sub you can. However, if you want an over all better speaker than the Monitors and Pios, I would suggest the RTi line from Polk Audio eBay store.

If anyone is close to Visalia, CA. I am selling my whole 7.0 set up http://www.avsforum.com/t/1497440/7-0-surround-sound-pick-up-only
