Why do you say that? Lack of bass, lack of power?

It won't be able to fill the room with sound, go with floorstander instead. The LS50 lacks dynamics from the lower mids down, a sub won't be able to fill that void.

Is that not true of any compact bookshelf speaker?

Yes, that is correct. Although certain bookshelf are so big that they don't have this limitation, eg: kl-650-thx which I owned before, amazing dynamics, crap imaging.

The Yamaha 1020 avr will work fine. I've run the ls50's on my old Yamaha 673 avr and they sound great.

I've almost always used compact bookshelf speakers, nothing bigger than a single 6" driver but the kef ls50's to my ears are the most dynamic I've heard in my setup but I can imagine they would struggle in larger rooms, there's only so much a single 5" driver in a small cabinet can do I guess.

LS50 is a great speaker. But if you ever get the chance to listen to that 650-thx, you'll see what I mean. Even today I prefer the 650 for complex instrumentals songs. I'd say the greatest thing about the LS50 is the vocals, also great for piano BGM and most OST tracks.
