I googled in-ceiling vs in-wall speakers but I could not relate information to my needs. I am planning to install home theater with speakers in my living room and basement living room. Here are the details. Appreciate if I can get some opinions on what to go with.

Living room 1: 11 * 20 size

Usage: 80% for watching movies/cable tv or 20% music

Concern: I had a home theater guy looked at the place and said it may need to make 4 to 5 holes for wiring/installation. I understand dry wall finish will make holes almost invisible. I am not sure how much visible they are going to be. Does people like homes with speakers installed, does this affect home resale value? My furniture is set but I may move them around a little but if required in future.

Budget: $ 2000

Basement living room: 12*14 size

Usage: 80% movies and 20% cable tv

Concern: I had a home theater guy looked at the place and said it may need to make 4 to 5 holes for wiring/installation. I understand dry wall finish will make holes almost invisible. I am inclined towards in-ceiling speakers because they look neat, no wires or speakers hanging. I am open to hear from experts and would like to know if you recommend in-ceiling speakers over in-wall speakers based on my above requirements.

Thanks in advance.

I cannot imagine that having inwall or inceiling speakers would lower the value of your home. I don't think you should be concerned about this.

I woud recommend inwall speakers for your front three main speakers (left, right, and center). In-ceiling for your surrounds is not as big an issue IMHO.

Having your main three speakers in the ceiling often results in poor imaging. Think about it, the sound is coming from above you vs in front of you.

Where woud you watch most of your TV? The basement or upstairs room?

I was setting in my brother in law's TV room with in-ceiling sound today and it was just really weird. His may not be set up right, but everything sounded like it was coming form the wrong place. I would say in-wall over in-ceiling for at least the fronts. As ack said, the rears may not be as big of deal.

I don't see any problem with value.

In your price range, there are lots of options for quality on-wall or bookshelf speakers.

Yes they are great speakers, but I am not sure you can put together a home theater speaker package (I am assuming 5.1 and a receiver) for $2K using Triad speakers. Perhaps the OP can discuss with Mike and see what his options are. If you can go in-wall for your front three it simply opens up more options and can keep your budget lower.

I love having wasted an hour looking for those triad speakers online just to figure out it is an authorized dealer sale online aka price fixing and gouging. Thanks for wasting my time.

Authorized dealers = price fixing and gouging??? Yeah I guess that's one way to look at it. eek.gif
