I have a lot of stupid sounding questions that I'm trying to figure out the answer too, so no better place than to ask you guys.

I completed my home theater setup, and am wondering what the best way to initally set up my speakers is.

Specifically, these are the main concerns I have...

Would I be better off having the center speaker above ear level (above the tv), level with my ears while sitting, or perhaps low to the ground facing upwards?

Also, with the the 4 surround speakers I have, should the rears and sides be the same height? And what height should that be? Above my ears on the wall or a stand, or at ear level while sitting? Also, ideally, how far apart should those rears be? Just opposite my couch (12 feet) or maybe a little closer or further?

I know experimentation is the best way to achieve the best setup, but I was wondering what I should initially try before I start tinkering.

I will be sitting about 9 feet from the tv and front speakers. Behind me, I will have about 3 feet to spare, and I have room to the sides at the 9 feet mark where I sit.

Ideally, the center tweeter would be a the same height as the front tweeters.

The main surrounds should be at or slightly above ear level and to the side or slightly in front of your ears.

The rear surrounds should be behind you and higher than the main surrounds. Mainly so they don't play into the back of your sofa. But also because they tend to play ambient diffuse sounds which you want to fill the room.
