I see lots of references in the forums to WAF. And while I can appreciate the angst that often accompanies the references I'd like to offer an alternative, brighter perspective … be glad you only have to worry about one woman's approval.

I'm a single dad who's dating so I have to worry about AWAF (All Women's Approval Factor). Bringing a date home (esp. the first time) to a 65" TV, a reclining couch with cup holders in the arms, and large speakers on every wall that appear to cumulatively occupy 20% of the cubic space in the room is the functional equivalent of picking her up for a first date driving a metalic-red 4 wheeler jacked 5 feet up in the air sporting little ladders to the doors and under-body LED lights, with "Here Kitty, Kitty" painted on the front and back differentials.

Monogamy is beautiful thing for the audiophile ; )

I, too, am a single dad. A female audiophile once told me, "The difference between a man who enjoys music and movies and a woman who enjoys music and movies is that the man want a living room inside a movie theater whereas a woman wants a movie theater inside their living room." Mine wants her own home theater system after experiencing mine. She wants it to be "pleasing to the ear" and not "gangsta" like most mens. tongue.gif

"I am NOT suffering from insanity... I happen to be enjoying myself!"

I too am a single guy who has no waf, but want my theater set up to reflect an as of yet unknown waf! Therefor, I buy reasonable equipment, both in size and capability (my subwoofer won't shake the house next door). My emp frontstage isn't huge and I think looks great. Now, I have in the back of my mind that this system may be moved downstairs in favor of a smaller system (and as long as it sounds great)...

Set up #1: EMP e5ti, e5Ci, and SLS Q line Audio surrounds, EMP 10i10i sub
Set up #2: Def Tech SM450, CLR2002, SLS Qline surrounds and Klipsch 12wD sub
Set up #3: JBL130, JBL120C and Klipsch synergy sub

When i was doing the single dad thing i would dump a woman that complained about almost anything.
Why put myself through that again was the question I would ask myself.
Kept looking till I found a real cute and real smart geek girl.
We have been married thirteen years and it has worked out beautifully.

Regards,
Charlie

I got lucky...
My wife not only doesn't mind me messing around with speakers and electronics, but she has encouraged me to make it a full time job! Apparently doing something that I love, and a more frequent smile on my face is a fair trade for a steady paycheck (who knew?). WAF is something we discuss all of the time, and she knows that the steady parade of unfinished cabinets, masses of wire, capacitors, inductors and boxes full of drivers will eventually turn into something that can be put anywhere ( a couple pairs of 40+ inchers in the family room, and even some 7 foot line arrays flanking the 104" screen in the living room).
My personal theory is that veneer is the key. Put a black cabinet (even in piano finish) next to a beautifully veneered cabinet and women will choose the wood 99.99999% of the time.

Let your wife choose the veneer and you may have a shot at those large floorstanders making it past the front door!

I love my wife

There are women who don't complain about everything?

*hee hee* My girlfriend told me pointblank that any woman who says she's not high maintainance...is lying."

And it's true about the veneer. Haven't had any complaints when it's done in cherry.

For the record I don't drive a truck like that or have big speakers ; )

It's all about the perceptions ... to woman who only has a 32" LCD TV, a cable box and a DVD player, any speakers/HT-setup looks ominously and/or alarmingly huge.

Seriously, let me know if you find a smaller system that sounds great - on that same search myself ; )

I definitely got lucky. My wife doesn't complain about my hobbies at all. Told her I was redoing the stereo, her response was "Ok.". Come home with a new gun, she doesn't care. As long as the bills are paid and saving put back we both let each other do what makes them happy.

Yours and mine would get along great! I'm sorry but if I had a wife that veto'd anything I wanted to do I wouldn't have a wife. I feel bad for every guy thats in that position, but then again they chose the life style I suppose.

Same here. And she quite likes the home theater.

This would be a good thread to post The Audiophile's Wife blog. I started at the beginning and read up to current. This lady has an amazing grasp of the english language, and puts things very succinctly. A very good read.

^^^

i love that blog... smile.gif

realistically, in my house, things have to pass the MAF (me acceptance factor)...

also, i think that many find it easier to blame the spouse than to tell the truth, if you get my drift... wink.gif
