I have about 1200 dollar budget and I would love to take advantage of black friday. I listen to a large variety of different music. My room is about 15 feet by 10 feet (I'll double check specs later I posted it on here before) and I don't have a sub or anything willing to uprade later.

I will also be using for movies and I'll upgrade to a 5.1 at some point.

Thanks!

Kef Q900's or Vandersteen 1C's. You won't find these on sale in your typical Black Friday store, though.

https://blackfriday.bestbuy.com/tv+amp+home+theater2/product/4791729/denon++600w+51ch+3d+pass+through+av+home+theater+receiver

would that be enough to power the kef 900's? Would 900s be over kill for my room?

my room is about 20x13 and I guess I'll eventual upgrade to a full 5.1 surround system.

I was originally going to go with deftech 8020st but the bipolar seems to hard to treat acoustically for a noob and they get bad reviews for music.

Thanks again too anyone who helps!biggrin.gif

The Q900 is an excellent speaker, but there is no point in having a speaker so huge if you are going to use a subwoofer.

It is also, in my humble opinion, a huge butt-ugly big black box. Few women would want to be in the same room...lol.

I suggest that you get the KEF iQ70 speakers, which are now only half-price at KEF Direct, $600 per pair, and add a NHT B12D subwoofer for $700 (those speakers are well worth the original $1200 price; they are a STEAL at the current price)

That will be a wonderful 2.1 system! You will love it IMO.

When you are ready for 5.1, get a pair of KEF C1 speakers for $300 and a C6LCR for another $300. The whole thing will be less than $2000, and you will have some very very nice sound.

Seems like such a huge price gap would leave a large quality difference right? Though I agree completely on their looking like a giant black box. thanks for the reply I'll look into this.

Also still wondering about the room size with such a large speaker might be overkill. If i could go with a smaller model and save some money for a nice sub that would be best.

Monitor Audio Silver RX1

HSU Sub

Use the RX1 speakers for surround duty, when you upgrade to 5.1

Considering your room size some of the bigger (a great sounding) towers might be a bit of overkill, especially if you plan on expanding to 5.1 later. For a combination of easy expandability and best sq for the price I'd also suggest getting good, musical bookshelf speakers and a sub to start with.

+1 these previous suggestions ...
Sierra 1's (sub now or later)
KEF Q300's plus a sub
Monitor Audio Silver RX1's plus a sub

I agree with the Monitor Audio RX-1's I demoed those and the B&W CM5's and preferred the monitor audio actually. If your doing speakers and a sub I would go that route. I ended up springing for the rx6's from monitor audio and have not looked back!

The Monitor Audio RX6 is a real nice speaker, with good imaging and soundstage presentation.

Only you can determine if the difference in quality is substantial. Also, towers the size of the Kef's or Monitor Audio's will not overpower a 20x13 room.

Your room isn't very big - but I do love those KEF speakers.

Look at the iQ30s for $350 a pair. Buy 3 pairs for your 5.0 (and have a spare, or convince a friend to do the same and split one of the pairs)), then buy a sub (that NHT commsysman suggested is OK, or a 12" sealed from SVS, Rythmik, etc) and have a great 5.1 for music and movies.

Whoops, didn't mean to imply the towers would "overpower" the room, just that really good bookshelves would suffice ; ) I like those KEF iQ70 towers also, the only potential downside for them might be finding a matching center speaker later when he tries to upgrade to 5.1.

+1 on this. Takes advantage a great deal and addresses the 5.1 upgrade.

A variation would be to just buy two pair now for the front LCR and a sub. Then upgrade to surrounds later (almost any KEF Uni-Q speaker would match well as surrounds).

Agreed. If the OP decided to go with a subwoofer bookshelf speakers would make a lot of sense. With that said, towers will work just fine in his room, even if paired with a suwboofer.

Baloonamite,

Have you decided you would you rather go with bookshelf speakers + a subwoofer? If so just let everyone know, as recommendations will change.

I like the reviews the q300 are getting and I think I'm going to go with them and a sub instead of floor standers. Eventually going to get everything matched for a 5.1

if I get this right the more wats per channel up to the maximum wat per speaker makes the speaker louder right? So i want a receiver with allot of wats per channel?

Speaker stand recommendations?

black friday is coming up and I'm keep an eye on new egg so I might change this. but it seems allot easier to treat the room for kefs than bi polars and the floor standers would probably be overkill

thanks guys.

yes I have, based on subwoofers usually sounding better placed away from the front left and right given a rooms dimensions.

based on what I've hear subs usualy sound better in a different part of the room than floor standers so yes.

Thanks for the tip I've gotten allot more info since I started looking into this seriously after a year or so of research and saving.
