So... I was able to score an open box Denon AVR1912 at BestBuy for $158 bucks!

I am now looking for some speakers to pair with it. My living room in the apartment is 21.25' x 12' and it has a weird offset wall that I am mounting the TV on. Its sort of awkard so I want to get a 3.1 and avoid the surround mess.

So right now my friend is suggesting the EMP Tek 5.1 set. I'll be ready to go and use the 3.1 from this set for $699 and eventually figure out how to wire the rears?

http://www.emptek.com/PreSeason.php

Or should I go with the Pioneer FS52, C22 and some sub for who knows how much (I think TigerDirect has the best deal currently)

Or maybe the Infinity P363 on sale at Frys for $110/each currently + some center + some sub?

What do you guys think?

Anthony

I'm also thinking about waiting it out for Black Friday in hopes EMP Tek has a sale?

Maybe get the E55Ti pair, a E5Ci, and ES1010i

I see their July 4th yielded some low prices and that 3.1 set up ended up costing about $1,000.

The new Pioneer speakers have receive very good reviews from everyone out who has tried them out. If you want a budget 3.1 speaker system, I would recommend the FS52, CS22 and a good sub such as Klipsch 12", PA-150 or BIC F12.

I was going to buy the FS52 and CS22, but I ended up ordering the Polk Audio Monitor 70 series, which are on sale for $149.99 each. In my personal opinion the Polk Audio sound better at lower volume. In order for you to get the same sound out of the Pioneers, you will have to crank the volume more, but overall the Pioneer were clear and decent just as the Polk Audios, but I just didn't like having to use more volume to make them sound louder. So, I went with Polk.

However, you can't go wrong with the Pioneers. Good luck!

fwiw, with your budget you could also start with a 2.1 to get a good pair of fronts and away better sub than save for a center channel. the infinity p363 for $110 ea. are very hard to pass up you could pair them with a epik legend sub $499 on sale this will give you a very good foundation to build on and keep you from upgrading anytime soon, saving you money in the long run. then save for a infinity pc351 center channel $199 on amazon( temporarily out of stock at the moment) just a suggestion

i'm so laid back,i'm laid out

Sorry I dont think I ever listed a budget!

I would like to keep it low aka why the EMP Tek E5Bi 5.1 set was on the table - I like that sub that you get... But then I am really liking the E55Ti towers.

So I guess if I were to set up the 3.1 set up that is affordable I guess it boils down to:

EMP Tek E5Ti/E55Ti vs Pioneer FS52 vs Infinity P363

Are the EMP Tek's worth the extra costs (or wait for a sale) vs the other two.

Thanks guys!

The Pioneer speakers have a VERY poor sensitivity of 84 db per watt; that is a bad choice. They will only give you one-fourth of the sound level, for a given amount of power, as a speaker with a 90 db/watt sensitivity.

If you want to buy a complete 5.1 system, there is a lot of poor-sounding crap out there. You only have to read the many complaints of the people who have bought the Energy Take and Infinity stuff and are unsatisfied by their tiny inadequate speakers; they will tell you what to avoid.

One that is a cut above the average is the Martin-Logan MLT-2 system, which you should consider. It is only $333 at Amazon, and IMO it is the best compact 5.1 system you will find for under $500.

As for the EmpTek E55Ti speakers, I am seeing them for around $800 per pair, and there are MANY better speakers for that money.

KEF Direct is offering the iQ70 speaker for $599 per pair (they were $1200), and that is a speaker that is WAY better than the E55Ti...no comparison whatsoever. The iQ70 is a very high quality speaker, and that price is a steal IMO.

I would start with the KEF iQ70 speakers and a KEF C6LCR center speaker and get a subwoofer later. Those speakers have very good bass.

The Klipsch RW12D subwoofer is $350 at Amazon right now, and that is a pretty decent one.

I definitely dont want a 5.1 I think because this is a rental place. I dont want to deal with the hassles of routing the rears. So I am definitely aiming for a decent 3.1 set up.

Those KEF iQ70s are nice! I cant find whether theyre 4,6 or 8 ohm speakers? Will the 1912 adequately power them?

I could just get those first, then get a center and sub later

I'd also give consideration to the Polk's onsale at Newegg. The Monitor 70's for $150 is a bargain. The 50's for $75 is also a great deal.

iQ70's are easy to drive, the Denon 1912 will not have a problem with them at all.

36Hz - 40kHz
• 8 Ohms 15-150W
• 90 dB (2.83V/1m)

I don't think they play as low as advertised but you'll have a sub eventually to cover the low end.

I think you should go to a place that has the speakers that you are thinking of buying. Listen to all of them and make a decision from that. I was set to buying the Pioneers 52, and 22 until I listened to them. They sounded good, but in order to sound good I had to increase the volume a lot more than other speakers. That turned me off a little bit, but the price was right. I almost bought the Pioneers, but I decided to think about it over night. The next morning at about 2 am, newegg has the Monitor 70s on sale. I bought two right away.

In my opinion the Monitor 70 are a better deal @ $149.99 each than the FS52s.

I see that sale on Newegg right now. How do the M70s compare to the P363s? I guess I'll stop by Frys today

I believe my parents have the P363. The Monitor 70 have more bass, but other than that they sound similar. You can't go wrong with either one. If the Monitor 70's weren't on sale, I would of bought the Pioneers.

The emp speakers are a great speaker for the money! Ihave the EMP 5 eti and they are great speakers for essentially 400 dollars/pr. Better than either the Polk or infinity primus p363s, IMHO! They look and sound very good! There are better sub available than the emps...

I got a crazy deal from emptek on Black Friday last year.

It was their E55ti's, center, di or bi poles and their 1010i sub for 1199 shipped.

I would bet they have a nice sale again this year.

Unfortunately too late... I purchased the Polk Monitor60s from Newegg for $99/each. Couldnt pass up that deal.

I think I'll just get the RW-12d Klipsch when that drops back down to $299

The EMP towers are also a lot more expensive, so not really a fair comparison. New egg does have the cs2 center on sale now for 99 dollars!

i know they cost more, but i found some used E55i towers for 400 a pair for him, which he mentioned earlier that he wanted. also found the matching center used for him for 120. so thats 520 for the front three which i think is a pretty good deal, not to mention im sure he could make an offer to get them even cheaper. is it more than the 300 for the front 3 polks? yes. is the extra 200ish worth it? imo yes, but maybe not his.

Ya I think it would have been worth the extra $200. But I had already unboxed the M60s by that point. Next go around I'll definitely go KEF or the likes smile.gif

Are you sure that's correct? I have NEVER seen the Monitor 70 for $100. Monitor 70 for $149, yes. Monitor 60 for $99, yes.
