Hi guys Im looking to replacement my Monitor 50's. I was cleaning them yesterday and I noticed the dust caps were "melted" at least thats how they look. I called Polk and they said they were most likely driven to hard. Well My avr is 90w RMS and the Monitors are rated up to 150w so I thought that 90w RMS would be modest. Well either way I an looking to get something better than the 50's. There is the obvious choices of Monitor 60's, 70's and the new 55T. 65T, and 75T series. Well I also looked into brands that mach my AVR Yamaha RXV661. I found a pair of NS-777 towers for about $400 which is an obvious steal. I know how to do the research and read reviews and they are rated pretty good but I cant find anything comparing the Yamaha's to the Polk Audio. Anyway I would like to hear some other suggestions for tower speakers in the $400-$500 a pair price range. I listen to a mix of music and movies and I have no sub woofer hooked up. Although Crutchfield has a Polk promo were they will offer a free 8" sub if I spend 500. Well let me know what you guys think.

With the exception of you DON'T want a low sensitive speaker with a low power AVR...I don't think there is any such thing as speakers "matching" and receiver! Might be hard to ignore the free sub with 500 dollar purchase with Polk.
EMP has a great speaker for the price- if you go with the EMP E5ti are a very good speaker and currently are 500/pr shipped, but you can often get them 25-40% cheaper (I got mine for 250/pr). Great for HT, but needs to work with a sub!
The Ascend Acoust cmt340 is a bookshelf speaker just over your budget- but at 600/pr shipped, that is about as good a speaker for that price as you will find! Hits pretty low, but you will want a sub, eventually

Set up #1: EMP e5ti, e5Ci, and SLS Q line Audio surrounds, EMP 10i10i sub
Set up #2: Def Tech SM450, CLR2002, SLS Qline surrounds and Klipsch 12wD sub
Set up #3: JBL130, JBL120C and Klipsch synergy sub

I have a sub that I built several years back but I moved into and apartment and I know that my sub is to much for this little place. Anyway forgive my ignorance but are bookshelf speakers really comparable to towers? I was always lead to believe dollar for dollar towers are the way to go. Thank you btw for your suggestions. I am looking into them now.

If you are going to use a sub...you can get more bookshelf speaker for the dollar than with a tower. The tower cabinet, in many cases, allows the driver to get lower. If you have a sub, you can get by with less cabinet and more drivers for the dollar!

Set up #1: EMP e5ti, e5Ci, and SLS Q line Audio surrounds, EMP 10i10i sub

Ok so now I am reading about the Definitive Technology Bipolar BP8B they are in the price range but it the BiPolar design hype? and what about the Yamaha NS-777 I was looking into. Im really trying to get as many suggestions as I can so that I can do the research and avoid the marketing ploys that manufacturers love to use.

I recommend the Andrew Jones' Pioneer FS52 towers. You audition them at Best Buy.

Andrew Jones is known for his design of the $80,000 TAD Reference One speakers.

AcuDef, are the newly redesigner Andrew Jones speakers better than the first generation? If so, it what way have those been improved? I auditioned those (first generation) and, well they didn't hold a candle to my SLS Q line gold speakers, except more muddy bass.

I don't think the 2nd Gen is subjectively better than the first. But others might disagree with me. Andrew Jones would say the 2nd Gen is better. biggrin.gif

Speakers are subjective. The room and speaker placement also play a huge role.

I think the Pioneer speakers 1st and 2nd Gen sound very good, but that is subjective as always. wink.gif

To be honest I have never been a fan or impressed by any Pioneer product. Not the speakers, receivers, amps, or subs. I have always related Pioneer to low end quality products. No offense and as always thank you for the suggestion. As of not I have Come to research the:

Definitive Technology Bipolar BP8B
Yamaha NS-777
Polk Monitor 60's or 70's
EMP E5ti

I really like the EMP E5ti. But am leaning towards the Monitor 70 II series

Is Pure Acoustic a good brand

Arx A3's

I have never heard them, but were suggested to me awhile back and others have said good things. I believe the Arx A3's are $499 a pair.

Those are all rather low-quality speakers there; not anything I could listen to for very long.

If you could spend $598, you could move WAY up to some very nice-sounding speakers.

Go to the KEF Direct website and check out the KEF iQ70 speakers.

These are excellent speakers, but have been cut to HALF PRICE as that line is being phased out for new models.

That is quite a deal on some VERY good speakers ( WAY better IMO than anything mentioned in this thread so far...).

I agree with Andrew Jones - and subjectively the phase 2, do sound better to me.smile.gif

Look for a used pair of Klipch Forte 11's or Chorus 11's. They play well above a great many speakers out today, whether new or old, are very efficient and can be had for around your price range.

Bad thing the Arx A3 isn't instock right now and will probably be Dec/Jan before they are back instock, from what I've heard.

There you go with your ******** posts again.

There is nothing low quality about the Arx or several of the others mentioned. How did you come to the conclusion that the speakers listed are low quality?

How do you know that you couldn't listen to them very long?

Thanks again guys. I am now leaning towards the iQ70. I like sales and after reading reviews and reports they seem like a great choice for my budget. I can add the extra 100 cash and just slap the ol lady if she objects lol. 50% off how can you go wrong lol. I just hope they still have them when I get my check. If not then those A3's seem like a great choice. I am honestly disappointed with Polk. Yeah they sounded great to my ears but that dust cap shouldn't had melted at such low wattage. The coil should have been designed to cool better.

If you thought the Polks sounded good, you will have to pick your tongue up off the floor after you hear the iQ70s. They are much more refined and clearer-sounding.

They are two orders of magnitude better; worth the $1200 they originally cost.

They will give you a serious taste of high-end performance.

Those are $700 dollars and $200 over the initial budget. That promo ends today I wont be buying for a couple weeks. When the times come over course I know I might have to get something different. I am aiming for the iQ70, second the A3's and if I really have to then Polk it will be. But I am being hopeful so thanks again guys. Suggestions are still welcome. I like to be open to as many options as I can

Yeah the IQ70's would be a great speaker. I looked over a few hundred speakers when I was on my speaker search and the Q900's and the IQ90's were looked at pretty hard. The Q900's were at the top of my list, however they are not a very good looking speaker. The IQ70 and IQ90 are much more attractive.

fwiw, have not heard the bronze bx series but i had the older bronze br5's in a 2.1 system about5 years ago . they where very detailed on the top end and had pretty good bass for their price. for music they where great and for watching the tube like i said the mids and uppers where very detailed so i would imagine a matching center and maybe a pair of bx1 for surrounds would make a very good ht system .really liked them hated to see them go. also audioadvisor has some small dented bx5's( $250 ea. with full warranty compared to $375ea.without the flaws). if you can live with some small cosmetic issues i would definitly suggest a listen

i'm so laid back,i'm laid out

Seems you're writing the Yamahas off? Just based on size, weight and construction they are way ahead of any others on your list. Just look at the fit and finish. True 3 way design.

I haven't heard them or the Kefs but I would bet the Yamahas are the better buy. If I had the room I would certainly consider the Yamahas.

Yeah I would like to get the Yamahas but I cant find them for less than 300 a piece. Cheapest Ive seen them was 350 each. But I wouldnt mind because I would like a set of fronts that match my AVR brand.

There's the NS555 with 6.25 in drivers instead of the 8in.
