I currently have a Cinemate Series II that I'm going to take back, I do like the sound quality and REALLY like the small footprint. But, I'm gonna sell my townhouse next spring and will want a better system so why buy the Bose now and have to sell it when I move and then rebuild a setup. Once I sell the townhouse next year the Polk's could be used for rear surrounds, I'll just run it as a 2.0 or maybe pick up a small sub and go 2.1. I mainly watch movie via my WDTV Live Streaming.

Was thinking picking up:

Polk Audio Bookshelf Speakers (RTIA1) or Energy Veritas V-Mini Bookshelf Speaker (VMINIB) or maybe some used Cambridge audio S30
Pioneer 5.1 Channel Receiver (VSX-522-K)

A couple of questions:

1) How will this sound compared to the Cinemate?
2) Can the bookshelf speaker lay on it's side? Current tv shelf has a max height of 8" and can't place speakers elsewhere
3) Should I get the Polk or the Energy? The Energy speakers are about $80 cheaper

I can only do this if the speakers can lay on their side, if not I'm stuck with either the Bose or a soundbar again.

Thanks for any help.

The Cinemate system is pretty brutal, IMHO, although I have heard the cinemate sound bar does sound better than many soundbars (and I am not a Bose hater...I bought my mom the min Bose Wave CD player and that thing is perfect for her)!

Do you need small? Speakers with bigger driver will sound better and speakers that actually have tweeter will also sound better...
And many speaker can sit on their side...

I am confrontable saying that all three speakers you mention will sound better than the Bose system- as I mentioned, bigger drivers and speakers with tweeters will be an improvement from the Cinemater

Set up #1: EMP e5ti, e5Ci, and SLS Q line Audio surrounds, EMP 10i10i sub
Set up #2: Def Tech SM450, CLR2002, SLS Qline surrounds and Klipsch 12wD sub
Set up #3: JBL130, JBL120C and Klipsch synergy sub

I went into the Bose purchase not thinking it was a great idea from what I read here, but I've been pleasantly surprised with it.

If I wasn't looking at growing back into a bigger system like I used to have I'd probably keep the cinemate and be perfectly happy.

I'm also considering the SVS SBS-02, unfortunately no where to listen to them locally, so it'd be a purchase based on their reputation.

Yes, 8" height is max. That's why I'd like something I know that will work well sitting on it's side.

I haven't heard the svs speakers... Or the smaller hsu speakers, but they get excellent reviews when space is tight! Also, the Cambridge Audio minx system is well liked by some.

I'm going to demo the Cambridge s30's tonight, I didn't realize that Visions sold Cambridge, so that works out well.

I just hope that if they sound good in the store that they sound decent laying on their sides at home.

I'm also going to listen to the Cambridge Min21's as those will be able to stand up

Have fun, they are some real nice sounding speakers

They didn't have them setup so I bought them and the Pioneer vsx-522. I think I'm gonna take the Pioneer back and exchange it for an Onkyo that the salemen recommended.

I'm thinking of a small sub, is the Polk psw108 any good?

For $200 you can get a PSW505 from newegg and is a much better sub.

Newegg.ca doesn't have the psw505. Only place locally that carries it is Visions and it's 588CDN, found them on ebay for 220ish shipped, so almost the same price as the 108 anyways. So I think I"ll order it.

Any recommendations on a receiver? Prefer on that has simulated surround, if such a thing exists.

Hard to make a recommendation not knowing what's available and at what prices in your area. Are you pretty much stuck with newegg.ca and amazon.ca ?
It would be a good idea to put your location in your profile. Don't worry, we don't make fun of Canadians. zeiglj01 might cause I heard Texans can be mighty mean.

I have the usual local stores, Visions, Future Shop, Bestbuy, Londondrugs.

I do tend to prefer Denon. I've never had Onkyo but they seem to be everywhere.
I saw the Denon 1613 on for a good price.

The Denon will be a good option, for the Cambridge speakers.

That's good smile.gif

I'll probably be moving to Lufkin next summer. Wow housing down there is so much cheaper. For the same money I paid for this place I can get 3x the house.

I'm trying out the Demon 1613 and its much better sounding than the pioneer.

Its a keeper.
