Hey guys I'm new to the site and need a little advice. I've had a 5.1 surround system for a while now but it needs upgrading. I currently have the Infinity Primus HCS Satellite system as well as a Klipsch KSW 200 subwoofer, but the speakers just are not cutting it anymore. My plan is to upgrade the front 2 with towers and get a new center speaker as well. I will keep the surrounds for now and upgrade them later. I will be running them through a Pioneer Elite VSX-52. I'm looking to spend no more than $1000 for the three speakers. Most of the usage will be for movies and gaming. I'd really appreciate some suggestions on what to get. Thanks.

Do you have room for 3 towers or do you need a horizontal center? I have infinity betas (which are hard to find now) but recently replaced the center with a primus 363 tower and am very impressed by it for the price. They would also match up better with the surrounds you are keeping.

I would say I most likely do not have room for 3 towers but I will post a pic of my setup later tonight. I'm not to worried about the new speakers sounding great with my current ones because they will all be replaced eventually. My main concern right now is just the front 3 since they are the most important. I saw that the KEF iQ90s are on sale now but can I get the matching center anymore?

The infinity Primus 363 is on sale at Fry's (last I heard) for just over $100/ea. Add a center and you are just under $500, leaving room for a considerable sub upgrade.

For fun: try turning off your center channel speaker and setting your reciver to phantom mode (it might be automatic when you shut off the center). See what that does to the sound. It should either ruin it or improve it.

If it improves the sound, you can consider running two speakers up front instead of 3 and that opens up new options at the $1k budget point.

I didn't have time to test it last night but I'll try to do it tonight. Right now I live in an apartment so a sub upgrade wouldn't do me much good. The one I have now is barely turned up right now.

Here is a picture of my current setup. I will obviously move things around once I get the towers but hopefully this gives you guys an idea of what I'm working with.

Energy Veritas V5.2 center speaker, selling for $220 each now (list is $550), = 660 for three, use one for a center, two for L/R.

Energy Veritas V-S-3 3 way surrounds, selling for 199 (use the code CYBERWEEK) at wwstereo (list is 450) = 400 for two

Gets you all five excellent speakers for about 1095. Or the front three for 660, but if you were planning for about a thousand anyways, this is a great deal.

Ok guys I think I have narrowed it down to 3: KEF iQ90, EMP Tek E55ti, and the Arx A5. Let me know what you guys think of each. I forgot to mention in my earlier posts that I will most likely wait until the new year to purchase the speakers.

Do you have a specific type of sound, or preferences you're looking for? You're not going to find a flat out "best". If you cant audition, and you're not sure what you're looking for, you're going to have to go with whichever one you feel the best about. Just make sure you buy from somewhere with a hassle free return policy (like amazon).

Here's my rec if you're completely up in the air

I have the KEF iQ90s and love them. That being said, they are getting harder to come by since KEF moved to the newer Q series. If you decide to go fore the KEFs, you might want to get the sooner than later.

I strongly recommend the KEF iQ90 or iQ70 speakers.

The C6LCR is a very good center speaker to use with them if a center speaker is desired.

The iQ60 has been dropped from the line; it was not very good.

I can tell you from experience the Arx A5 is an awesome tower. Great top notch build quality, powerful XBL2 woofers, braced cabinet, and the planar is IMO one of the best sounding tweeters i've heard. Just a very smooth natural sounding tweeter, it never shouts HERE I AM.

I contacted the KEF rep on here to ask about the iQ60c and they recommended the q200c as a good substitute. Can anyone compare it to the c6lcr?

They do look like very nice speakers but of the 3 I listed my wife likes the look of them the least. That doesn't completely rule them out but they to a hit because of it.

I think I have narrowed the list down to 2 speakers. The KEFs still remain in the competition but I have added the Swan Diva 6.1s. While they are going to be a little more expensive than the KEFs, from everything I have read they are amazing speakers for the money. What does everything think of these two speakers, and which do you like better?

Yeah I've been talking to him about them. I'm kind of wondering how good of a deal it is. I can get the same thing brand new shipped to my house for a little over $1300.
