Hey everyone!

I am looking to setup a surround sound speaker system for my apartment. The room is probably 16 x 16 (typical ceilings). My budget is about $600-$650.

My questions are - What do you recommend for a surround sound system? Should I get a 5.1 or 7.1? Should I get a packaged option or put together a combination of speaker sets? or should I just get a home theater in a box type of system?

If you can give me some good model name/numbers and answers to the above, I can do research on what I want based on it. Thanks.

Go on Audiogon, visit local dealers and look at the trade-ins, sometimes a MILF is better than a v. for the money:)

Now seriously, at least make sure the 3 front channels are matched, read a lot.
Reviewers like audioholics, stereophile, absolute sound rarely serve b-xxxx to readers.

Yes. Sorry if its on the low-end.
I was searching threads here, and saw some recommendations. Most were based on personal experience. So, I didn't know where to start and what specs to look for to see if I am getting the best bang for my buck.

You best option would be to wait for everything to be on sale.

Pioneer FS52 x 2 = $200
Pioneer CS22 x 1 = $100
Pioneer SB22 x 1 (pair) $100
Sub: BIC F12 x 1 $200 = $600. This does not include taxes or shipping cost.

Polk Audio Monitor 60 x 2 =$200
Polk Audio CS2 x 1 = $100
Polk Auidio Monitor 30 x 2 (2 pairs) = $160
sub: BIC F12 x 1 $200 = $660. This does not include taxes or shipping cost.

Definitive Technology ProCinema 60 5.1 set up $229

Energy Take 5.0 $129
Sub: BIC F12 $200
Total = $339

MartinLogan MLT-2 5.1CH Premium Home Theater Speaker System Black System $399.99 Promo code EMCJJHA59 will give you $120 off.

Energy Take Classic 5.1 5.1CH Premium Home Theater System $399.99

Do you already have a receiver? If so, what brand/model is it?

If you are looking for an entire system, including receiver, then take a look at the Onkyo HTiB systems, The HT-S5500 is a 7.1 system and the HT-S7409 is a 5.1 system and both are under $600. I don't have any of these systems but I have heard similar systems. They aren't too bad for HTiB systems but going with a separate speaker package + receiver/pre-pro/amplifier is generally better. I would recommend HSU Research or even Emotiva speakers but those are out of your price range, unless you start with a 2.1 system and build onto it with their surrounds. Emotiva has huge discounts on their speakers right now along with free shipping within the USA. Their X-Ref 5.2/4.1 package of 5 speakers is currently at $847. Regularly $1327.

HD-DVD = 94
Blu-Ray = 120 ( 24 Warner red2blu )

GusGus, thanks for the recommendation. I can get your Pioneer recommended set for $650 after shipping. So that seems good + $200 for a receiver.

Jevans64, yea I would need a receiver as well.

How much would the put together pioneer package be for if I were to buy a comparable HTiB? Is the sound quality comparable to a $1400 HTiB? I think I want to go with the Pioneer option.

Have you thought about doing a better 2.1/3.1 system and then adding the surrounds as you can afford them?

I recommend the Pioneer deal

If you go with a smaller package - then Acoustic Energy
use to list for around $1700

The Pioneer set up will be better than any HTIB.

Thanks! It's on sale right now for $50.
So now that saves me $130.

Can anyone recommend me a Denon receiver? In a similar price range... $200-$300?
Do you think a HSU sub is better? Can you recommend something (Around $200 hopefully)

Get a refurbished avr from accessories4less. HSU is better but more expensive. The best sub for $200 is BIC F12. Newegg has the RW-12D for $300 right now.

Denon 1612 from AC4L

Cadence CSX12 sub - in the cart there should be an option for free shipping

Good advice again. Thanks! I will check out accessories4less for Denon 1612. Till now, here is what I am paying:
BIC America F12 = $200
Pioneer SP-FS52 x 2 = $250
Pioneer SP-C22 x 1 = $70
Pioneer SP-BS21-LR = $50

I found out about Japanese made Denon receivers and HSU sub from a coworker. He has a Polk setup with Denon avr and HSU sub, that he invested about $2000 in.

fwiw, another suggestion . if you have some patience and can wait . imo best 5.0 speaker value out there for less than $600. again you could do without a sub with this system as the 363's have some kind of deep end bass for the time being. and save up for a "good" sub like a hsu vtf-2mk4 $600 this sub will make a big difference in the sound quality of your movies compared to the budget subs out there

pair of infinity p363's for front $235+ ship. ( fry's electronics) back order for shipping.if you purchace they will hold the price

pair of infinity p153's for rear $99+ ship. ( fry's) back order

infinity pc351 center $200 ( amazon ) back order
and as for the power source the denon avr1612 from ac4l is another good value
again just a suggestion

i'm so laid back,i'm laid out

How is Accessories4Less? I am seeing lot of one-star reviews about them.

Do you guys/gals have personal experience with them?

A lot of us have bought from them - they have been around a long time.
I have had no problems.

Just a FYI on Denon " Made in Japan. " That is no longer the case except for the 4520ci and the top one or two AVRs of the past couple of years. ALL of the mid and low-end receivers are made in China. They are still designed in Japan as far as I know. Doesn't really matter though since nearly all electronics are made in China now.

Good choice on the Pioneer setup and selecting a companion receiver.

HD-DVD = 94
Blu-Ray = 120 ( 24 Warner red2blu )

Hello all - I will also be upgrading to the Pioneer FS52, CS22, SB22 speakers and BIC F12 sub.

In regards to avr - I am stuck between the Onkyo tx-nr717 and denon 2113cl.. Any thoughts which would be better with the Pioneers and BIC F12?

Or the Onkyo 809 / Denon 2312 .. I would go for the 818 / 2313 though the price range is a little over my budget.

I'm fairly new to the home theater world so all suggestions and guidance are sincerely appreciated.
