Reposting with a much clearer idea of what I want:

Looking for a 5.0 setup for 70% movies, 30% classical, opera, jazz music

Layout:

6.5 ft ceilings, carpeted

Budget is $2500.

Can't do auditions due to work hours not aligning with when stores are open, so kind of have to go with reviews.

Prefer to spend more money on front, since a lot of music listening will be done from the desk (movies watched from couch).

I will be purchasing a denon 1713 and hsu vtf-15h outside of the $2.5k budget.

Need the front speakers to look like towers, wife's orders. bookshelves with matching boxy stands that make them look like towers are fine (like sierra 1s + tp-24 stands)

Getting so confused between all the different brands and models
  • Deftechs - Read these aren't so great for music
  • MA RX - ?
  • kef q900/600/100 - ?
  • paradigm mon 9 , maybe mon 7 - ?
  • swan t200 - ?
  • ascend sierra-1s - ?
  • songtowers - without ribbon upgrade?
  • philharmonic - ?
  • nht classic 4 - ?
  • jbl studio - ?
  • klipsh rf-82 ii - ?
  • focal chorus - ?

Any more suggestions, or opinions on which of these?

Sounds like those JBL Studio 590's arent so out of your budget anymore tongue.gif Small monitors like the Sierra 1 are going to completely fall apart trying to play from 25' away... I think those JBL's are the ticket for your budget and situation.

Every time you double the distance from your speakers you loose 6 db (4x power) of spl. This is what I was getting at in the other thread. Dont let the audiphoolery confuse you too much, the basics are well, basic.

Yeah, after reading a ton, my budget exploded. But I'm pretty firm at $2.5k, don't have much more than that!

Figured that monitors wouldn't really work, hence why the sierras are the only ones on there.

What surrounds would you pair with the jbls?

These would be the true match

http://www.amazon.com/JBL-Studio-530-Bookshelf-Loudspeakers/dp/B00622STI0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1356855780&sr=8-1&keywords=studio+530

Putting you at $2550 with the 590's and 520C.

You could also go with these if you intend on wall mounting, and save $100

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/638082-REG/JBL_8320_8320_Compact_Cinema_Surround.html

Or you could go even cheaper with any variety of speakers. Surrounds are far less critical then the front 3 as far as matching goes

For that size room, what about Klipsch? The high sensitivity means you can get to the same volume with less receiver power.

Marantz SR-5007
Klipsch WF-35, WC-24, WB-14
Klipsch RW-12D
LG 55LN5600
Sony PS3, Xbox 360, Wii U

!) A pair of PSB Image T6 speakers for the front, with a pair of Image B4 speakers for the rear and a C4 center. Those should run around $2000 or so total. I think the Image T6 is the best-sounding speaker you can get for under $1500. I had them for 2 years and they were great.

2) A pair of Monitor Audio Silver RX-6 speakers with a pair of BX-1 speakers and a Bronze BX center; around $2000 or so.

any reasons why you don't recommend the c5 center and the rx center? it seems like it would come under $2500

With the Monitor Audio RX Silver - go with the RX Silver center.

Also put Focal on your list - they are good with Movies and Music
Good price for new in the box

Since acoustic music is a big part of your listening, you definitely want good mains with a matching center. Unfortunately, your budget isn't huge and you'll be powering the speakers with a receiver in a large room, so the speakers need to be easy to drive. I'd recommended the Focal Chorus 726V, CC700V Center, and 706V rears. You should be able to get these five speakers for $2500 or less. I've heard good things about the Salk Song Tower and center too. The three Salks would be around your budget and you could get some cheap rears.

Pricing out the Focal Chorus set at the local retailer brought it to $3000 before tax. Where is it < $2500?

And the Salk Songtowers are only recommended with the RAAL tweeter, which brings it to $2k + $700 for the towers and $800 + $400 for the center, a bit too expensive.

This is an option:
In Post #8 - you can get Focal towers and center for $1100. Plus, you can get the 705V for
surrounds here > http://www.dedicatedaudio.com/inc/sdetail/34398

That still leaves you with $1000

You should be able to get a 30% discount pretty easily from an authorized dealer. If not, find another dealer.

Well, wife stopped by the local dealer and approved the Focal Chorus set that was recommended here, so that's what we ended up with. Ended up getting a decent discount, so only a little overbudget smile.gif

I haven't heard the speakers yet, since the speaker cable hasn't gotten here yet, but the wife heard them in store and said they were great.

Thanks for all the help!
