Have a great HDTV but the sound is terrible. Has anyone tried unhooking the internal TV speakers and wiring tower speakers directly to the TV (without using an external amp)? How is the sound?

Trying to get away with having to buy ANOTHER 5.1 amp but still getting semi-decent sound.

Thanks. cool.gif

You say you have a great TV but you want to rip it apart and hook up tower speakers to it?sry but that will not work...just get an inexpensive avr and use that...won't cost much and then you can leave the TV intact...wink.gif

Whatever amps are in the tv for its speakers wouldn't be enough to drive towers anyway.

I don't think the amp for your TV speakers has the power to drive tower speakers. You don't
need to buy a 5.1 amp again. They still sell stereo amps biggrin.gif.

Maybe get something like this....http://www.crutchfield.com/p_580M282/Onkyo-M-282.html?tp=180
or there are cheaper one starting at $100. Don't know what your budget is or what your
tower speakers are.

If all you want is power for speakers: hit a pawn shop and spend $30 on an old AVR.

That Onkyo amp wont work because it doesn't have a volume control. You need a preamp to connect to it. More than likely his new HDTV only has an optical output and what is needed is a variable analog output to use with that M-282.

Onkyo makes several stereo receivers that would work though. This one has an optical input too.

OP should provide the make and model of the TV, it would help tremendously.

Why not a sound bar?
