Hello,

I just purchased a Denon 2112 receiver and need a pair of book shelf speakers with a budget of $250.

- Room Size: 15X25, carpet
- Mostly watch action movies and listen to classical rock.

I have been looking at the Polk RTi6 and Cambridge S30, but can't decide which one fits my needs better. Will be adding a sub and may add a center channel if needed. I am also open to suggestions. smile.gif

Take a look at the Arx A1b. It is an extreme value in its price class. I can't speak for the Cambridge speakers, but the A1b would embarrass the Polk in sound quality, detail, smoothness, and overall sound output (especially bass output). Not even close between those two.

Here's a thread with pix comparing the midwoofers of the $500 Axiom M22 to the Arx A1 (the older, smaller bookshelf):

The A1b would be worth a look for you.

EDIT: Product link

I should also add in the interest of full disclosure that I helped develop and field test the Arx A5 towers. I am not an employee of TAI, but I did help to develop the A5.

Arcam AVR300, Panny BDT-500, Toshiba SD-9200 CD transport, Vizio XVT 55" LED/LCD (full direct-backlit w/ local dimming), Arx A5 & A3rx-c Mains, Arx A2rx-c center, HSU VTF-15h, BJC ten white w/ ultrasonically welded connectors.

The clear choice for me, is the Cambridge S30

Another nice one, is Acoustic Energy Aelite One

+1 for the Arx A1b if you can bump your budget $50.

Heres the picture since you can't see them unless you register. Still haven't been able to figure out how Jon has designed such a nice bookshelf in the price range he has it in. Really the woofers in the Arx models are like smaller verisions of the Exodus Anarchy woofer that Kevin Haskins designed.

Thanks Buford I had forgotten about that thread and those pictures.

No prob. They are YOURS, after all. wink.gif

I haven't heard the Cambridge and don't know about what driver technology it uses. However, I don't know of any sub-$600 bookshelf that uses XBL2/SplitGap driver technology. The magnetic planar tweeter is also a very low distortion design.

You ditched your Axioms for the A1's, correct?

Yes sold all the Axioms and have all Arx setup now. The A1s are doing rear surround duty right now with A5 fronts, A2 center and A2 side surrounds.

If you have a Guitar Center near you, you can go take a listen to some Behringers--they have a couple of passive speakers that fit your budget. Or if you have pre-outs on your receiver, you can check active models also from other companies.

The Behringers tested well a few years back in a blind shootout, though I can't find the link right now.
