I believe that the Salk SoundScape line would probably best the B&W 800/801, but they may be slightly higher than your budget, cant remember, lol. I also believe that the Salk HT-2TL would come very close, if not succeed the 800/801. Other quality speakers like the Salks, would be the Philharmoic 3, and the Ascend Acoustics Sierra Tower. I think any one of those that I mentioned will have a better, crisper, clearer, more detailed top end compared to the 800/801. The main place that the 800/801's would win is in terms of bass responce. But, if you can afford a quality subwoofer, then that is a moot point. (note-that for subs, I recommend the Seaton SubM, or the JTR Cap or if on a smaller budget you could look at some of the CHT 18.2's or HSU VTF-15, or even build your own, which would probably surpass all of those that I mentioned as far as subs go.) Hope this helps!

New or used?

I'd go for a used Nautilus 802.

Everyone will have a different opinion.

Some forum members may think Salk is better, but I don't.

Salk would be a problem with shipping costs regardless. I'd think he'd be most interested in speakers available in Europe.
