you have a 500 dollar receiver, I would recommend a budget of 1,000-1,500 dollars for speakers. A great receiver will not sound great with crappy speakers. If you cannot afford that all at once, build your speaker system in steps...2.0, then 2.1, then 3.1, then finally 5.1.
however, if you really need a 5.1 for under 500 dollars, I think the previouskly mentioned Martin Logan Mtl-2 is about as good as you can get!
