I am about to purchase a pair of the Pio Andrew Jones bookshelves, which seem to be an amazing bargain. I have three questions, though.

1. These speakers seem to have no real competition at this incredibly low price point ($130-odd for the pair). Am I missing something?

2. Apparently these speakers are not magnetically shielded. Any problem if they are a couple of feet either side of a Plasma?

3. Can anybody recommend some inexpensive but aesthetically pleasing stands for these? I generally find cheap speaker stands to be pretty ugly, but I don't want to spend more than I'm spending on the speakers themselves!! A lot less, in fact.

4. I can get a good deal on a Denon 1513--will this drive the Pios well? I am just starting in my knowledge of ohms etc! smile.gif

I know the 1513 is missing Audyssey, but since I plan to use it with only the Pio pair and soon the matching center speaker or maybe the sub instead, I'm thinking I can get away with it (by the time I can afford the rest of the 5.1 setup I plan to invest in a far better receiver.)

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Polk m30 are often on sale for around 100/pr and the Infinity primus p163 also around 100/pr (new egg and fry's, respectively). those would be int he same class (better or worse, according to YOUR muscial taste). IF...IF you can get the Def tech SM 350/450 for around 180/pr, as some have reported recently from new Egg...that speaker is a step better than the three mentioned.
I didn't like the series one pioneer speakers very much, but have heard the series 2 is improved!

Set up #1: EMP e5ti, e5Ci, and SLS Q line Audio surrounds, EMP 10i10i sub
Set up #2: Def Tech SM450, CLR2002, SLS Qline surrounds and Klipsch 12wD sub
Set up #3: JBL130, JBL120C and Klipsch synergy sub

For a real tight budget - the BS22 Pioneer speakers is my top choice for under $150 a pair
TigerDirect has them for around $99 a pair

You do not need shielded speakers for a plasma

Look for speaker stands here
http://www.standsandmounts.com/speakerstands.aspx

Also, Amazon has stands -
however if you are looking for stands - you can consider the Pioneer FS52 tower speakers
for around $200 a pair at TigerDirect
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/search.asp?keywords=pioneer+speakers

The Denon will drive the Pioneer speakers - Also check www.ac4l.com for refurbish receivers.

Wow, you guys are so helpful, thank you!!!

Elihawk, thanks for the info on alternatives--I'll take a look. I have a strict budget this time around, so I think that rules out the Def tech, unfortunately, but thanks for the link!

Zieglj01, thanks for the info on stands and shielding. The towers push my measly budget too far, I'm afraid, but I'm thinking of moving the bookshelves to the rear when I can afford towers for the fronts.

Is TigerDirect a well-regarded dealer? The price is certainly right! smile.gif As it happens I am indeed planning to buy the refurbished 1513 at ac4l.

As far as buying Pioneer speakers - I have not heard of any major complaints, and they do
ship fast. There seems to be some mixed feelings about the company.

Some people have received price matching from Best Buy.

Your option/choice and decision.

Tigerdirect has them for the following

Fronts: $99 each
Center: $69
Rears: 89 pair

Best Buy will price match that and you won't pay the $50 in shipping. I'm looking at whether I want to get this setup too.

Thanks! With that shipping cost, Best Buy seems like my best bet.

Hmmm, just taking a look at the Infinity Primus P163 and the Polk M30s, per Elihawk's suggestion, and the Infinity in particular are incredibly cheap on Amazon. Can anybody tell me what sonic differences there are between them and the Pio Andrew Jones? Is one better for music/vocals, other better for movies/dialogue, and the like? Movies are important but I'm most critical when it comes to music.

EDIT: After further reading, I'm sold on the Pios once and for all (unless anybody's able to change my mind!)

Pioneer bs22 has the smallest driver (4 inch woofers) and aren't very sensitive, so you need to make sure your avr has decent power!
The infinity p163 has the biggest driver (6.5) and will likely hit the lowest. Also pretty sensitive...however, some say the speaker pulls some at 4 ohm, which means it can strain an underpowered AVR!
The Polk m30 has 5.25 inch drivers and decent sensitivity. Some say a little bright...
I have heard all three and own the polks (m40)...but if I could do it again, I would pick the p163s!

The so called little Pioneer 4" woofer is not a wimp - and they are not real hard to drive - I own them
and I have tested them in a 20 X 30 open room - and they can get real loud with an average receiver.
They have good clean tight bass that goes down low, where some other speakers with larger woofers
start to roll off earlier than the Pioneer BS22 speakers. >> They can take a lot of power, and will not
easily burp or break-up. They are not harsh or edgy sounding >> and also have a good midrange and
treble, with nice/clean detail. They can handle both music and movies.

I am not the only one that has tested then in big open spaces, and have driven them hard.

I have owned Infinity Primus, Polk Monitor and Klipsch speakers, Plus some other budget speakers,
and my choice is easily the Pioner BS-22 speakers.

Do you need shielded speakers near an LCD TV? Thanks.

Shielded speakers came into popularity back in the days of electron tube TV's. This is because of the way those TV's work. They basically shoot electrons toward the screen surface, and when you place a strong magnet near the screen, the magnet attracts all the electrons to that point distorting the image and colors. Since modern TV's such as LCD, LED, and Plasma don't use this method of operation, you don't have to worry about magnetic interference.

I have 4 BS 22's, front height and rear center surrounds. They are perfect in my 9.3 setup. You cannot come close audibly at this price point.

Why go out to a movie theater?

Wondering if the BS22 speakers can/should be used in an actual bookshelf position or would they need to be on stands?

the name bookshelf speakers is kind of a misnomer. a bookshelf in general is a terrible place for a speaker.

They sound OK. If you listen to loud music, you're much better off pulling them as far away from the back wall as possible - up to 2'. If you listen at low (not quiet, low) levels, they're fine.

Hi
What do you think/know about using a t-amp with the Pioneer SP-BS22-LR? I have a Topping TP20 and I'm looking for a new set of bookshelf speakers to go with it. This setup will be for music listening only, at responsible volumes, in a relatively small room. I favor clarity and crispness over loud volumes and tons of bass.
The reviews on these pioneers have been exceptional, as you all know, and getting them would be a no-brainer... Except I wonder if they are not sensitive enough at 87db. Also, I've been told to go for 8 ohms, while the pioneers are 6 ohms.
Any thoughts, experiences, comments, suggestions will be most appreciated.
Thank you very much in advance.
