Looking to upgrade over my sound bar setup (Sony htct 500) I have been running for years. What you guys think of the following setup? I don't want to spend to much. Also if doing a 3.1 setup what would be a good center channel?

Harman Kardon AVR 1700 $199 at best buy

Polk Audio PSW10 $89 on amazon

Pioneer SP-FS52s $129 at best buy

Why not get the matching pioneer center. I have both the center and the towers. Love them both. You can usually find them cheaper than best buy online . I got the towers for 100 each and the center for 69. Best buy matched both prices. Check tiger direct or new egg. Good luck.

I would leave that subwoofer on the shelf. Can you stretch the sub budget.

Sure I can stretch it a little. I will set $200 as the limit for the sub. What are you thinking something like the BIC America F12? FYI I like to listen to a lot of music and concert blu rays.

I would look at this JBL subwoofer - the word is that it is good with music

+1

The JBL is a very good deal. With the pioneer speakers you would have a very solid budget setup.

I'm going to go with the PSW505. My dad has an older Polk 12" with his setup and the thing is awesome.

So ended up picking up the Pioneer SP-FS52s today and a Yamaha RX-V373 receiver. Even without a sub the SP-FS52s sound awesome with music!!!! I have them cranked listening to pink floyd right now. Even just this sounds better then the sound bar!!! Next will be the Polk PSW505. Sounds soooo good right now!!!

Your not kidding they are good!!! I'm a big music fan and man oh man just listening in 2.0 right now until I get my sub. These things can kick out some bass on there own. Very very impressed with them. I haven't even touched any of the settings on the receiver yet besides setting it to run in 2.0 for now. The highs, mids, clean bass, sooooo impressed!!! I think the receiver is a good match since it outputs 100 watts and the speakers are ratted for 130. Last concert I was at was TSO last month and I just played some TSO cranked up and it sounded like I was back at the concert. These speakers just fill my home theater with great sound! Man what was I thinking running a sound bar for the past 7 years.... This 2.0 setup even kicks the sound bars ass lol. Can't wait until they break in but I can't help but play them loud and proud!!! Any one looking at this all I can say is I 100% recommend getting the Pioneer SP-FS52s. All the reviews are spot on saying that for the price these are hands down the best towers you can get! Can't wait to have my father come to my house and show them off to him!!!

Sound bars definitely beat out TVs speakers, but they simply cannot compete with towers or a decent pair of bookshelf speakers. Just wait till you add a sub. Home theater will come alive!

Of course, I got it modified with the TK-427, which cheeks it up another, maybe, 3 or 4 quads per channel.
