Hey guys,

I know this topic is going to carry across a couple of the sections so please don't get mad at me.

Setup:
TV: SANYO DV55441 LCD 55"
Apple TV 3
Nintendo Wii
Dynex non-regional SD DVD player
Time Warner Cable (YUCK!) DVR
Just need sound

Budget: $250 for speakers, sub, and receiver together
Hardware: 2x floor speakers with mid's and high's (right and left), 1x sub, 1x receiver

Receiver Features needed: coaxial in, decent sound quality, ability to be programmed into a universal remote such as Time Warner Cable's UR5U-8780L-TWNC. And thats it! I don't need HDMI through... I don't need 7 channel, I don't need wifi (I have an Apple TV), I don't need a UI of any kind. I just need a bare bones receiver that puts out decent/great quality.

Floor Speaker Features: 3' tall'ish. Don't need to be powerful (850 ft^2 apartment) but they need to deliver on quality.
Sub: Same as Floor Speakers... not trying to bring the house down, just need something to round out the sound and fill the low's

I don't mind buying used stuff from Craigslist so that would cut even more money off the price

I would really appreciate some feedback and advice.

thanx!

tim

ps: If I could get away with 3-5 way speakers and skip the sub that would be great!

Have you thought about a home theater in a box system? Check ebay. If you could go 400 to 500, you can get an ok sounding solution from Yamaha, Panasonic, or Onkyo.

Newegg is sold out of the Polk R300 at $100 a pair. Those were the least expensive floor standers. Links:

Sub

$254.97

Onkyo system @ $400

@myoda

- thanx for the suggestions. I live in a 1 bedroom apartment, so 5.1 surround is out of the question. I don't want/can't run wires around the room. The setup I outlined is perfect for what I need. Just 2 floor speakers and a sub. I need all of the sound coming from in front of me. The receiver you suggested does not have coaxial in which is what I need.

@Jay1

-That is more like it! But is it possible for me to get 3way speakers and do without a sub?

----

To put my expectations in context for you guys consider this: my last sound system was 5.1 setup like a 2.1that cost me $50 NEW... and that was 8-10 years ago!

Update:

My wife thinks our 55" TV is gaudy. SoO... I'm guessing that she is not going to go for an awesome system. What do you guys think about something like this: http://www.goods2purchase.com/onkyo-onkyo-htx22hdx-home-theater-p-5728.html

Or this one? 2 optical and one coax input.

It would be helpful if you could provide your location so we can check the Craigslist ads.

On your budget? No. The cheapest speakers with good bass are about $250pr

You're giving up sound quality for the bass capability

For an apartment that size, I would go with the Pioneer SW-8 at $69 for a sub (instead of the Polk previously mentioned) and pair it with bookshelf speakers. But it will nudge up your budget to do so since you need speakers, too. Best bet is to start with the receiver and best speakers you can and add a sub later.
