I have a Pioneer 818 vsx receiver hooked up to my tv and also a pair of Polk tsi400 floor speakers that I use when watching tv. I do not have a center speaker and was wondering what the benefit would be to my current setup?

For just tv watching?
There's little to no benefit from a center channel unless you have multi-channel source IMO.

JVC DLA-RS57U Projector - 106" Grandview fixed frame screen
Onkyo TX-NR3009 Receiver
Oppo BDP-103 Blu-Ray Player - PS3
Paradigm Monitor 11 Mains
Paradigm Monitor CC-390 Center
Paradigm Monitor ADP-390 Surrounds x 4
Velodyne DPS-12 Subwoofer

That's kind of what I was looking for. I mainly watch tv and sports on it and I know I have good floor speakers.

Maybe I missed something here, but I'm not clear on why you assume he doesn't have a multi-channel source. About 99% of my viewing is multi-channel.

I'm not into "thumbs upping" or "liking". Don't take it personally. Just assume that I found your post helpful. Unless it wasn't.

None of my tv watching has a multi-channel source would be the reason. If his does than different story, which is I stated "unless".

Interesting. Is most television programming not broadcast in Dolby Digital up there in SK? Pretty much everything is here in IL. I would think the situation down in LA would be more similar to mine for dsims, but maybe he'll tell me I'm wrong.

I completely agree with you that a center channel is less imperative for non-multi-channel sources. I was just surprised that such sources would be a consideration for TV viewing. It sounds as if there's less consistency in content delivery than I realized.

i still get my tv the old fashion way, through an antennae lol. Once it goes through the digital/analog converter to the recorder I believe it's down to 2 channel.

Old fashioned? I'd call that the modern way! tongue.gif The majority of my viewing is OTA too.

I'm not sure what about your setup would be taking it down to 2 channel. But that's way off topic for this thread anyway. I'd encourage you to find out if the signal in your area is actually DD or already downmixed. It may turn out to be a pretty small hardware upgrade needed on your end to get the proper mix.

It is broadcast in DD5.1. I'll have to take the time at some point and figure it out.

Back to the original question though about getting a center make sure it's from the same series of speaker so it looks like the cs20.

I still don't know if it there will be a significant advantage adding a center channel though. Possibly for improve dialogue? For sure not for sports.

HD tv i watch from just basic cable channels is broadcasted in Dolby Digital 5.1

To the OP a center wouldn't be a bad addition to your system. The Polk CS10 or CS20 would be the direct match to your TSi400's

IMO the biggest advantage to adding a center is for those not sitting right in the sweet spot. If you watch TV alone and always sit in the same position, it wont really do much for you. But most people move around or end up with people sitting a little out of the sweet spot. For those people, the center speaker helps to anchor the dialogue to the screen. The secondary advantage is that it takes some of the load off of your other speakers. Right now all five channels of audio you're receiving are being downmixed to two speakers. Lessening the burden of half of the center channel's content from each of your existing speakers will pull them that much farther out of distortion caused by power compression and excursion.
