Our best TV is in the bedroom. 50" of glorious Panasonic plasma. Unfortunately we've had it hooked up to a cheap soundbar, but I'm hoping to change that now.

The space is 12' x 12'. This is our main place to watch movies, with very little music. To improve the cinema experience, I'd like to put in a 5.1 system so we can enjoy actual surround sound.

WAF is significant. Smaller speakers (no taller than 8" or so) are preferred. Being able to hide the sub as much as possible is a good thing.

I'd also like to keep the budget for all speakers to $2000 +/-. The receiver isn't purchased yet, but I'm looking into Denon and Yamaha.

Any suggestions for speakers that would work?

Thanks so much in advance.

Have you looked at something like the MilleniaOne by Paradigm. You could opt for the 5.0 and get a nice SVS sb-1000 sub.

Are You wall mounting or stands?

Thanks for the Paradigm and Minx suggestions. The fronts will ideally go on a wide dresser underneath the TV; the rears will either be on the wall or nightstands.

I'm new here (in audio) but the MilleniaOne satellites have been reviewed and had outstanding remarks. Very waf friendly and doesn't skimp on sound according to reviews.

I faced some of the same constraints but on a slightly lower budget, and I ended up going with the Polk TL350 set with 4 sats and a center. I paired that with a Klipsch rw12-d subwoofer. The receiver is a Denon AVR-1913.

The sub seems to be universally heralded around here as a great budget subwoofer.

Not so much information on the TL350 speakers, but they've gotten some excellent reviews, like this one from Sound and Vision.

Don't have mine set up yet unfortunately, so take this as a suggested option more than a recommendation. I'll report back once my set-up is live, though, if you're still in the market and interested.

Good luck!

A second on the SVS SB-1000. Your size room where space is limited is exactly what that sub was designed for. It'll definitely be better than anything else you can find with that footprint (size) for $500 or less. Next step up is the SVS SB12-NSD which would give you better SQ and a little more output than the SB-1000.

If you wanted to stay underneath $2000 for receiver, speakers, and sub, the Energy Veritas V-Minis are a good choice

These would not be as good as the Paradigm MilleniaOne, but are very good for their price.

If the center is too big, you can use a regular V-Mini. It's actually best to use three of the exact same speaker for the front soundstage anyway.

They also come in a rosenut finish if that would make the wife happier:
