i purchased the onkyo tx-nr616 receiver and i currently have a set of acoustimas 10 bose speakers, i am going to take everyones advise and get rid of these bose. i found a set of Infinity Entra® Point Five speakers on craigslist for 200 bucks but they are atleast 8 years old. they are in new condidtion and have hardly ever been play and definately never been played loud! but anyway. would there be an advantage to buy a new set instead of these older speakers? i mean what would i gain. i am not worried about getting a 7.1 set of speakers because my room is to small for 7.1 anyway. 5.1 suits me just fine. other than that what would be an advantage besides the speakers being newer. are they still gona sound like a new set?
thanks
steve

Should have spent less on the AVR, but that's just my opinion. You against building over time or do you want a 5.0/5.1 now?

1.2 pairs of HTD Level 2's and the Lvl 2 center puts you at $530. Minus the 10% off right now puts you at $477.

2. If you're close to a Fry's then they're always having sales on the Primus line. Good budget setup

3. Look into the Andrew Jones pioneer speakers

I'd check the classifieds here also

...that's about it for your budget

I don't know anything about the Entra Point Five speakers, but just a quick look at them shows them to be a HTIB type speaker. They sold for around $450 over 10 years ago, so I can't expect them to be all that great based on that alone. Driver quality, cabinet quality, etc is all going to be MUCH better with the setups I have listed above. They might cost slightly more, but in this case the slightly higher cost will likely yield a MUCH larger gain in sound than you'd expect. This is of course my opinion, but I'd think most here would agree. Again, everything is preference and diminishing returns so ultimately it's up to you. As far as age, speakers from 5 years ago or even 20 years ago can be just as good as many today...or much better. Some speakers today will be better than their predecessors. Just depends on the speakers in question.

Will they sound better than Bose? I have no clue since I haven't heard the Infinity's and every single Bose setup I've heard is god awful. Pretty much goes without saying around here that Bose is pretty darn bad for the money. Will the above setups be better than both of these? I can't say what you'll think, but I'd be 99.9% (maybe slightly more biggrin.gif) sure that it would be a yes. You might have to spend another $100 over your budget right now, but the gains will be huge.

ok what about these then.. i found this on craigslist for 100 bucks http://www.hsuresearch.com/products/stf-1.html
and what about pairing it with these http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Klipsch+-+Quintet+5.0-Channel+Home+Theater+System/5888124.p?id=1218703207213&skuId=5888124&st=quintet&cp=1&lp=1

i know the klipsch are high but i have a 200 dollar best buy card that would bring me real close to budget range with the stf-1 subwoofer.

Even with your $200 BB gift card, that still comes out to $650. WAY over your budget. If you want to spend at BB, go with the Pioneer stuff. Easy as that

FS52's, C22 and BS22. You're out the door in the neighborhood of $200, which leaves you around $200-250 for a sub. Stretch that to $300 and pick up the Klipsch rw-12d from Newegg. Done. wink.gif

ok here is what i have so far.. will be here thrusday..
i ordered the onkyo tx-nr616 avr, i also ordered the new svs pb1000 sub woofer. i also order the klipsch quintet 5 surround speakers. i know i am going to be missing a spectrum there of about 80hz to 120hz. but the guy at svs informed me it would be ok and sound amazing with what i have .. i didnt have a ton of money and researched and bought the best i could afford. now saying that i have a couple hundred bucks left and have run across a set of Klipsch Synergy F1 floor speakers for 100 bucks!!. they are a bit older but not dinosours yet. what would i gain by buying these and using these as front speakers and then using the 2 extra quintets i would end up having as the surrounds as a 7.1 setup! would it make a huge difference by doing this.
and is it going to sound ok if i dont buy those synergy f1 speakers?
and last question. should i buy a y connecter and connect the sub that way or just use a single lfe connector.
thanks
steve

ok got the svs pb1000 sub yesterday and also picked up the klipsch f10 floor speakers for 100 bucks as my fronts. currently only runing it as a 2.1 with these for now because my klipsch quintets dont arrive till later today. but i have to say this svs sub is AMAZING!!! i am on the band wagon now that BOSE TOTALLY SUCKS! i am hearing lows now that my old acoustimas 10's couldnt even think about producing and highs from the klipsch floor speakers that bose couldnt even comprehend! and it is only a 2.1 so far. i am amazed! but let me tell you svs subs are truely amazing. if your trying to make a decision between svs sub or something else, get the svs! you wont be disappointed
will check back in when i get the quintets today!
