I recently purchased the Monitor 75T floor standing speakers for use in my media room. I already had the Monitor 70 Series II as part of my main family room home theater, so I thought I'd do a little side-by-side comparison.

You can see the specs and features of each speaker here:
Monitor 70 Series II
Monitor 75T

In 2011, I purchased the Monitor 70s for $220/ea on sale. In 2013, I got the same price for the 75T. Awesome biggrin.gif

So here they are, standing side-by-side:

Cat used for scale purposes:

I played 4 songs (Mario - Because she said hi, Frou Frou - Must be dreaming, Mozart - Requiem, Carl Orff - Carmina Burana) and 1 movie (Lords of the Rings: Return of the King) as my test.

Speakers were plugged into an Onkyo TX-NR609 which was set to Stereo only. The subwoofer was left unplugged, so the only sound came from the 2 speakers themselves. The receiver was set in Bi-Amp mode, for whatever good that does (next to nothing since the speakers have passive crossovers).

Anyway, all that to say the conditions were the same for each test (same receiver, same settings, same bi-amp configuration, same songs, same movie, same room, same cat...)

My personal feelings:
I have absolutely loved the Monitor 70s so my expectations were high for the 75T models. The 70s produce a great range of lower-mid to high frequencies and have crystal clear definition. They can produce lower bass, but not with a great deal of power or feeling. They really need to be paired with a sub. Some lower frequencies can actually hit pretty hard, but this is more in the 200Hz+ range. Unfortunately, without a sub, this can make the bass sound inconsistent. With a sub, everything sounds perfect. The highs are super clear, and voices sound amazing. Special effects of course are stunning. The clashes, clanks and slashes of medieval battle make it sound like your own head was being lopped off.

The 75T was nearly identical in all its qualities, but with a few exceptions. The speakers seem capable of slightly (and I mean slightly) lower frequencies, with a little more power. Still, a sub is required for full effect. The highs are just as clear, but perhaps not quite as ear-piercing. I'm not sure if it was slightly attenuated, or just more controlled.

At the end of the day, you'd be hard pressed to really discern a difference between the 2 sets. I would say that the 75Ts are just as good as the 70s, and there is no need for hesitation if you're thinking about buying. They go on sale frequently on NewEgg and are an incredible value! If you have 10x their price in disposable cash, I guess you might look at a different brand or set, but honestly, be prepared to spend that much more to get anything "better." I'm honestly not sure if anything other than scientific instrumentation could detect the difference in more expensive gear.

Happy shopping, and I hope this helps everyone understand the slight differences in the new set.

Thanks for the write up. I've suspected the 75's were nearly identical to the 70's. It's good to hear from someone with first hand experience with both. I once tested the 70' s against the tsi500's and heard no real difference between the two in my room.

Have you ever heard the 70's powered by a 200 watt amp? I've got my 70's running off an xpa-5 and they can sure hit the lower frequencies with more authority then the did being ran off my denon 1611 or onkyo 809.

I don't need snobs to tell me how to think, thank you!

No, the only thing I've heard them powered by is the Onkyo receiver. I'll be purchasing another Onkyo unit whenever one goes on a decent sale... I got the TX-NR609 for $196 new on Amazon, and I'm holding out hope that a similar sale will occur for the TX-NR616 or 717 models... But even then, I assume the output would be very similar. The 717 would definitely give it more juice, but the 609 I have now already pushes them past comfortable listening levels at approximately 70%

I like the new look of the 75 and 65. Agree that for the money they are excellent speakers. I own the Monitor 70 II, and they sound excellent. I regret not buying the CS2 when it was available and on sale for $99.99.

You still looking for a CS2 Gus? The price isn't all that bad.

Just a quick note for anyone who is concerned about overall width, since the feet protrude:

The actual overall width including the feet is 9.5" but the feet are easily removable. Here's a pic showing the screws in the feet. Nevermind the tape measure... perspective is just bad in this shot

I have one Monitor 70 that I purchased used for 50$. Since the 75t is on sale right now, do you think I could pair one m75t with one m70? Or would the timbre be off?

The timbre would definitely be off, but not by much. However, if you play movies/music at high volume, I think it would be enough to bother you. Also, the tweeter is a tad higher on the 75t, so it might even sound "uneven" to your ears, but depends on the acoustics of your room. I would not recommend it...

Glad you posted your review, Adoniram. I know people have been wondering how similar the Monitor II series and the new Monitor T designated speakers are.

Even though I have the 75T's, I think the 70's look A LOT better.. haha.

The tweeter is also more ear level on the 70, but whatever.

Positioning looks a bit different than in that pic, that was the rough draft.

Thanks for this. I got a pair of Monitor 70's and have been kicking myself for not getting more to finish my set.

Quick question, I have a cs2 for the front. Should I put the Monitor 70's in the front, the 75T's, or does it really matter?

Doesn't really matter. The CS2 will timbre match either set. Just whatever looks best to you.

I haven't done a side-by-side comparison of the 25C versus the CS2, but I would bet they are also very similar. Given that it's a center speaker (and isn't matching another unit somewhere else in the room), I'd say you were safe with either.

So that means TSi500, Monitor 70-II and Monitor 75T are kind of all the same...meaning no big sound difference?
I have a pair of TSi300 and would like to upgrade, but keep my CS2
TSi500 or Monitor 75T or 70-II?
Looks like I can't find Monitor 70 anymore (1st serie)......( I am looking for the Cherry color)
By the way, what's the difference between Monitor 70 and 70_II?

The 75T is now $180 each at the Egg with the always popular promo code, expires 04/20/13.

I have fronts which I built from Madisound and have high quality MTM components, but only 5" mid/woofers right at $400 pair. I was looking for a tower I can bi-amp with my Onkyo 717, but I don't know if this is the upgrade I am looking for.

Your review is very compelling, because I don't trust any of the "reviews" pro or con that are listed on the Egg or Amazon. Thanks for posting the review.

Bi-amping with AVRs doesn't really accomplish much (if anything). The real benefit of bi-amping comes from active crossovers and separate amps. With AVRs is more marketing gimmick than benefit.

Just picked up two. I have onkyo 818 to power these. I also would like to buy a 25c and 45b to complete. This sound good? I have two 12" dayton 1200 to go with these when the set is complete. Would there be an advatage to go 7.1? Saw a post where a guy used another pair of 75t for fronts. Overkill?

I just picked up this exact same set (75t, 25c, & 45b) to go along with a PSW505 sub and a Denon AR1613 receiver. Should all arrive today (except the 75ts will be in tomorrow). Needless to say I'm like a kid waiting to open up my Christmas presents since this is my first dive into anything more than a $200 HTIB.

I would complete the set but the 25c is not in stock at Newegg. I see it went on sale for $130 a few days ago. This could be the reason for it being out of stock. I am also excited because I currently have the Jamo s420 as my current setup. Someone also recommended the Klipsch rf-42 series instead of the monitor 75t set. Any thoughts on this?

The sale must have been why out of stock. Newegg ran a 4 day sale, and that's when I ordered mine and they have shipped. Glad to hear I got to them before they were out. I also thought about the RF-42s instead of the 75ts. They looked very comparable, but I like the look of the 4 drivers as opposed to two. Plus, this way my whole set matches. I've heard nothing but good things about the RF-42s, but haven't seen them in person.

There's never too much amp power. And you need the power to listen to music at LOW volumes, if your amp is not powerful enough you will lose half of the details, dynamics and bass . Another reason, with a weaker amp/receiver you are more likely to fry your tweeters.

In that you are very wrong. A small step up, let's say to RTiA 5 would make a noticeable difference. And if you go all the way to RTiA 9 paired with 600 watt monoblocks ( Emotiva XPA-1 Gen2 ) - the difference will be night and day. The depth and width of the soundstage, the body and richness of the sound.. And that's just Polk Audio, an average Joe speaker brand.

Sooooo, if I could get the 70's at a lower price what reason would there be to pay more for the 75's? I don't care at all about looks....
