Since upgrading the main tv in the family room, I'm getting the itch to build a dedicated theatre. It's something I've considered for a while but now its something that I would actually like to price out and see just how much it would cost and what I can actually get for the money I'm willing to spend.
The room is in the basement which is currently unfinished. I havent had anyone come in yet to quote me on construction costs so I will need to make a few phone calls soon and see how much this will be. The area I am thinking of placing the theatre is roughly 15-16' wide by up to 35' long. I figure I wont need all of that space and in the end plan on having 3 rows of seats with 3 seats per row. This should give me enough space to add one more portable chair to each side if more people come over. I figure that you will need roughly 16.5' for seating to allow for space for people to stretch (Im using Salamander seating as the benchmark, not sure if they will be seating though). I plan on using a 120" screen so I figure the front row should be roughly 10-12' from the screen with each row being 66" further than the previous (11', 16.5', 22'). With this information I figure 24-26' of interior length will be needed. that should give me clearance behind the last row to fit a rack. I would have liked the rack to be upfront but I dont think there will be enough space. Once walls are put up and all of the treatment is done interior width will most likely drop to around 13'
As for the equipment I want to build something that is decent but relatively inexpensive. I was looking to keep the speakers, projector, screen, amp, avr as close to $10,000 as possible not including shipping or anything like that.
Benq W7000 $1800
Elunevision 120" fixed screen $400
Emotiva XPA5 $900
Anthem mrx 300 $1000
JTR T8 x5 $6000
Surrounds added later
subwoofer up to $1500
Total: Under $12,000 slightly over budget but w.e.
I chose that Benq projector because I read a review today that compared it to a few other projectors and it seemed to stack up very well for 2D, not the best of the options but nothing that said it was awful, and it got glowing 3D reviews as it had virtually no crosstalk. Also Since Im in Canada electronics are quite a bit more expensive and much harder to get. This one is available at our local retailer and I can get it for a pretty good price.
On the topic of screens the Elunevision screens seem to get good reviews for a cheap screen, that screen is listed as having a $600 msrp and being able to get it for $400 seemed pretty good to me, what do you guys think?
Bouncing around the forums people seem to love JTR around here good service and good products. I figure lets try my hand with him. I would like the T12 but that would push me even further over budget. what about stands for the speakers, are they needed, can these things be wall mounted lol?
For the sub Im not sure if I should look at a dual setup right now and get something like 2x svs pb12 NSD, or get a single pb12 Plus and consider adding another later on. Also When considering power are the emotiva amps and anthem receivers a good combo. I hear very good things about the ARC room correction and the Emotiva XPA 5 is rated at 300w for 4 ohms which can give me reference level volumes at 16.5' according to the online calculator I used.
What do you guys think of this setup. Is there anything that sticks out from that list that I would need. Im hoping that the construction can be done for less than $13,000 to keep the entire build at or under $25,000. This would be a very large investment for myself and I just want to make sure that everything I can is the best for the money.
To add I realize that seating can be a huge cost. I just did a quick build on Salamander Designs site and it told me that the seats would be close to $21,000 which is way out of my budget. Which theatre seats do you guys recommend and how much would they be, I'm not very familiar with seating. If Theatre seats are too expensive I may just go to a Lazy Boy and purchase 3 couches for now and switch them later on. As for theatre seating, the ceiling is rather low 8', is it wise to leave the first row at ground level and increase the height of the subsequent rows by 8"-1', leaving 6' of clearance at the third row?
What else would I need to make everything work. What about acoustic treatment, how much is it and which ones are recommended, again considering that this is not an existing room and will be built for theatre use. This is still in the very rough planning stages so any feedback would be cool.
