I am running a 5.1 speaker setup (bookshelfs) and looking to go to 7.1. I am trying to decide between adding two matching bookshelfs or adding towers for the mains. My use is 100% for movies. I never listen to music at home (just in my car). I know that traditionally most people go for tower speakers as their L/R mains. I can see the preference for this with music, but I am wondering if it's a good idea for movies. I worry about over powering the center channel or the other surrounds.

Thoughts?

4 MartinLogan LX16s and a Motion C. Sub is the Energy S10.3.

For 100% movie set-up the only weakness I see is your subwoofer. Add bookshelfs, but you'd be better off with a beefier subwoofer, IMHO
Transmaniacon likes this.

Actually, I'm fine with the sub. I want to hear the low end, but I don't have any real desire to feel it. If I made a sub change it would probably be to go with 2 down firing 8" subs instead of the front firing 10"

If you are worried about your center speaker the Motion 30 will be a better match for your LX16s. Adding that and more LX16s to complete your setup would be really nice, especially if you are happy with your subwoofer.

I agree. The Motion C was a compromise due to budget constraints.

When I bought the LX16s I was literally on my way home to place an order with Axiom to replace my aging Boston Acoustics micro 90s. I had about $1100 to spend. Never dreamed of getting MLs. I happened to stop by Best Buy on the way home to look for a movie and they were closing out their LX16s at $199 each. I grabbed the last 4 they had. Current discounts on the Motion C brought the total right to my budget.

You got a great deal on those. They cleared them out because ML changed the name from LX16 to Motion 15 so they match the lineup better. That name change saved you some serious cash though!

I know. That's why it only took me about 30 seconds to jump on that deal when I came across it.
