I have a Yamaha 573 receiver and Infinity p363 tower front left and right speakers. I am looking at adding a powered sub, but am running low on funds and the wife's patience.

I was going to pull the trigger on one of those budget subs like the Polk psw-10 that's on sale for $80 on Amazon right now, but I noticed on the specs that the frequency only goes down to about 40hz. My tower speakers go down that low. Should I wait until I can afford a little better of a sub, or will it still improve my overall sound?

If you want a Polk sub, save up for the psw505. Anything lower is not worth it regardless of the price.

I don't need snobs to tell me how to think, thank you!

IMO, save up for a better sub. You'll end up with something that's less likely to be unsatisfying, and buying once - rather than buying and upgrading soon afterwards - is less likely to strain your wife's patience. smile.gif

Now I see the Acoustic Audio RWSUB 10-inch, 400 watt down firing sub going for around $100 on ebay. The frequency range is lower and it's more powerful than the Polk psw-10. Does anybody know anything about this Acoustic Audio sub?

400 "mystery" watts and extension to 24Hz @ -?dB. It may not be any better than the Polk.

-- Edit --
They're supposedly sold exclusively through this site. Specs say 200W RMS, 24Hz @ -?dB. There are questions about the trustworthiness of both vendor and product.

If you're going with an inexpensive sub the Dayton sub 1200 is at least a known quantity.

The smaller sub1000 is $20 cheaper.

Both are better than the Polk PSW-10.

Yes. You should wait. First a sub comes with both a speaker and an amplifier, so imagine what you are getting for a regularly priced around $100 sub. Just thinking about price alone without knowing anything else, I would suggest at least considering the JBL SUB150P at Newegg on special for $149 (promo code EMCXVWL99)

But we also need to figure out what kind of sub you need:

What size is your room in overall volume (cubic feet) and does it connect to any other open areas?
What is your listening preference, movies, music, gaming (%)?
Any size restrictions?

Finally, there is an AVS subwoofer forum where you should research (and generally better to ask questions there--see the sticky at the top of the speaker forum). Here are two threads that can help:
