I'm looking to start a 5.1 system with a refurb denon 1612. I am looking at a new sub, and need some speakers to start my system. From looking at other threads, this will be a "budget system." I don't have thousands of dollars to spend on speakers. I was hoping to get some suggestions on what to pair with my receiver for my L/R front speakers. I am looking to spend about $150-$200 for a pair of speakers. Obviously, I'm new to the whole audio thing so any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I would reccomend the Cambridge Audio s30 bookshelf speakers, they sound amazing and are around $220, and the matching center is great too (s50).

+1 Would be extremely difficult to get a better speaker at that price point. Amazon also carries them.

Thanks guys. Are there any other recommendations? I posted a similar thread about a subwoofer in the subs section, and of course the replies are that I should up my budget on that also. I could spend more on one probably, but not both. If you had to choose, would you sink more money into the front speakers or the sub?

If the answer is sub, are there some other, cheaper recommendations for speakers? I probably sound pretty annoying, but I appreciate any help.

You can only go so cheap before you start lowering the quality.

The def tech sm350/450 bookshelves can be had for 200/pr! The matching center can be hard to find, but they are a very nice bookshelf speaker for 200 bills or less!

Set up #1: EMP e5ti, e5Ci, and SLS Q line Audio surrounds, EMP 10i10i sub
Set up #2: Def Tech SM450, CLR2002, SLS Qline surrounds and Klipsch 12wD sub
Set up #3: JBL130, JBL120C and Klipsch synergy sub

So I was looking for those cambridge audio speakers on amazon because I have an amazon gift card I have yet to use. Its for $50, so it would definitely help my budget if I could find some good options on amazon.

As always, thanks for the help.

Check out NHT...can even pick them up used for cheaper. They measure very flat...sound good and come highly recommended.

These come highly recommended as well: Dayton Audio B652 6-1/2-Inch 2-Way Bookshelf Speaker Pair -- these are on Amazon for 50 bucks as well.

It's right here (albeit not many in stock):

That would be compromising a bit much for front speakers. With a $50 gift card and some additional funds available, the S30 would be a much better choice in the long run, in my opinion.

You can find them and all of the Cambridge audio S series speakers on Av Hi Fi, it uses Amazon as a payment method so you can probably use the $50 gift card there

The S30's go in and out of stock regularly on Amazon. When they're out of stock it usually lasts less than a week.

If you have an Amazon Prime membership you get 30 day return plus free return shipping on most Amazon items - including the S30's.

I've had the Prime membership for so long I don't remember what the regular/non-prime return/return-shipping policies are ; )

fwiw, pretty much you can go to any speaker review and get the exact same highly recommended response from all.i would say that a majority of the reviews come from people who have heard nothing but tv speakers, radio, or some type of home theater in box satalites. i own the s-30's in my small listening room and the dayton b652's in a 5.1 garage theater for the grandkids (did'nt want any thing to expensive with 4 grandkids and their neighborhood friends horseplaying ).i would definitly pay the extra $200 for the s-30's

i'm so laid back,i'm laid out

Infinity Primus P163 speakers are right in your price range, and IME fine sounding speakers.

There is even an extant Stereophile review of its very similar predecessor with both technical and subjective comments:

Here is a subjective review comparing it to other options: http://www.soundstage.com/equipment/infinity_primus_p162.htm

Well the s-30s are out of stock on amazon, and I went to Av Hi Fi, but there's no place to enter an amazon gift card code. So I guess I'm waiting until Amazon gets them in stock again. Thanks for the help gentlemen. Now I just need to find my sub...
