Hello All,

Ive been doing a ton of research on speakers and just catching myself up to speed on a lot of the technology out there! I recently just bought a Yamaha rx-v473 receiver and i have no speakers to go with it! I have a budget of around $400, which i know isnt much but its better than nothing!

Ive spent a lot of time looking at polk setups, but im not committed to anything by any means. I dont have a problem piecing a system together, but what im looking for is a 5.1 setup. If the L+R and surrounds could be wall mounted that would be preferable. There is just too much info out there for speakers so i thought id come get help from some knowledgeable people! Thanks in advance.

If i had to make a decision today, it would be the energy take classic 5.1 system...Im just leery of the lower end frequency response on the center channel. Hoping i can do better!

The best 5.1 system that I know of, for under $500, is the Martin-Logan MLT-2 system.

It has a better subwoofer and front speakers than most other packaged setups, and is available for under $400, which makes it a great deal.

The front speakers on the Energy Take system are far too small, and the subwoofer is a joke.

People post here all the time bemoaning what a bad choice they made when they bought it; benefit from their unfortunate experience and stay away from it.

It is usually better, IMO, to mount some small shelves on the wall and use those to put the speakers on. That allows the speakers to be somewhat isolated from the wall acoustically (use stickon rubber feet on the speakers).

I browse this forum a lot and I dont remember anyone bemoaning the Take Classics decision. I dont own them and Im no fan. Just sayin....
I do agree with you about the sub though. If I was going to purchase the Classics at all I would just get the speakers and get a Bic F12 or something comparable for a sub.

No, Mr. Bond. I expect you to die!

This is a great deal right now for someone looking for a budget subwoofer.

If you need to have 5.1, that ML set looks ok. Honestly though, I would suggest just looking at 3.1 or even a 2.1 right now and filling in the rest over time.

Is it solipsistic in here, or is it just me?

I just looked to see if this was still active. You would be insane to pass up this deal! Seriously. This will blow away the Takes and Martin Logan and anything else at this price right now.
http://www.wwstereo.com/Energy/VMINI5.0R
Enter in promo code MEGADEALNEWS and you can get these for $350. Better hurry.
Then get that JBL 150 for $150 and you will have a fantastic budget setup for $500.

Thats a crazy deal! I was actually looking at the Veritas V-Mini-C 2-Way Center Channel Speaker for $95 this morning and was going to piece in around it. I was thinking of getting the satellites for the take classic for $100 a pair. This may be a stupid question, but does quality suffer when you mix speaker models? Or even worse makes? If so i would be more inclined to get a whole package from same manufacturer

I agree! Ive seen this price on this earlier this week and everyone seems to love it. Great power for that price.

The front 3 are by far the most important and it is best and simplest if you keep them the same make and model. Are you considering not getting that 5.0 package for $350?
I would not mix the Takes and the V minis. The Vs are much better speakers.

No, Mr. Bond. I expect you to die!

I got it from the Energy Owners thread. Its been going on for a couple of days and I thought I would try it for this guy and the promo code still worked. I am very surprised that they are not sold out and still on sale.

Im at my budget with these alone...but it was definitely one hell of a find! I dont think i can pass it up. Spec for spec it blows it out of the water. I have this crappy sub from a sony bravia home theater system. Model number is DAV-265. Would i be able to use this for a while until i could convince my wife to get the JBL sub?

im not entirely sure. Im assuming no, but the only connection to it is a DAV connector. Wattage is 285. Is there an easy way to tell if its powered? Does that mean it is separately powered by a plug?

Do you have to plug it in?

In my original quote i mentioned i have a Yamaha V473. The speakers that i currently have had an impedance of 3 Ohms... This is the reason i was looking to upgrade. These are almost too much speaker for my receiver, but cant pass it up. Receiver watts per channel is 115

Nonsense. The Vs will sound excellent with your 473. That is a great match.

Budget subs are a dime a dozen. Speaker deals like this are very rare. Save up for a month or so and you can get a sub.

I agree. The V-Minis are a nice speaker set at that price, and I bet you will enjoy them for what they are even without the sub (but they will definitely be better with a sub). Just live without the sub for a few months, and moan to the wife the whole time about how they just don't sound good without a subwoofer wink.gif

Don't forget to play the, "I didn't realize these needed a sub" wild card almost immediately smile.gif

When you get ready to buy one, check the Budget subwoofers discussions, opinions and questions thread in the AVS subwoofer forum. Then you can find out what the best deals are for your needs at that time.
