Here's a late entry you might want to consider from NHT.
NHT Classic Four Surround 5.1 System - it is $4,200 and includes their Classic 4 mains, 3C Center, Classic 3 for surrounds and their B-12d Powered Subwoofer with DSP. All speakers are accoustic suspension with stunning high quality piano black finish.
You can get a second sub for $800 bringing it up to your $5,000 budget, assuming you don't live in a state where they need to collect sales tax.
You could lower the price significantly if you went with a Classic 3 pair for the mains instead of the Classic 4. The Classic 3 is a three way bookshelf size speaker rated down to 45 hz and would blend beautifully with the subs. I own them and must tell you that their imaging is simply amazing. They make it appear the sound is coming from the performance and not the speakers, even if you are sitting off center.
NHT classic series speakers have received accolades from many reviewers over the years, including from Stereophile and Home Theater.
You may not be able to buy them locally, but they come with free shipping and a 100% satisfaction guarantee including free return shipping if you reside in the US.
I'll second the Martin Logan recommendation. Was blown away with the $2200 esl's in a movie demo. Thought electrostats were only good for music but never heard anything better than them for HT. Have their higher end model Theos on order now.
You aren't the only one, brother. I have NEVER heard a Paradigm speaker I liked (I am not counting subs) - and I have heard more than a fair share. In fact, Paradigm & Triad are my least favorite brands but at least Triad has a few models that I think are strong. The Paradigm rep just offered us the line with Anthem as well. Not my thing!
Same here..Paradigm and PSB...they just didn't do it for me. I heard the entire line up for most part on both sides...some were ..ok but no were good. (To my ears)
Now if you are planning to go ESL...there are some pluses and negatives you must consider...please look into those.
