I have my speakers comming and I have to get some wire now. Because one of the speakers I have to do an extended run all alond the back of the house to reach it, so its well beyond the 48 feet they say for 16 awg wire. So do I have to get 14 and spend he extra money? dont know if it matters but I am running all tower speakers except for my center in a 7 channel set up. And my reciever is a pioneer sc-65. Thanks in advance for the help.

Well yes I would be buying in that length, but my question is about the guage of wire to use, for a distance over 48 feet, the reading i have seen says to do 14 awg not 16. But I dont want to waste money either. I am not running a 10k set up here.

Recommendations seem to be all over the place. Here's one article I found on the subject:

http://www.audioholics.com/education/cables/speaker-cable-gauge

Here's another I've seen referenced here several times:

IMO you should bump it up to 12 AWG. It depends on a couple of factors - the ohm rating of the speakers and how much power you plan to run to them, but for that distance 12ga is the best choice to future-proof the cable runs. Check out this link for a table that can help with distances.

Monoprice 12AWG is good, and not expensive.

Hey there Saturn!

Yeah, recommendations are different wherever you go. I've stuck with Roger Russell's rant table as a guide. Using this calculator the audible loss for a 120ft run of 12awg is acceptable.

Hey Nethawk!

Hope you're enjoying that great system despite that nonsense going on in the Salk thread! biggrin.gif

14ga doesn't cost that much if you buy from monoprice.com
