would be for a bedroom/pc system, using a vintage Luxman R113 Vintage Receiver, 35 watts per channel @ 8 ohms and Audioquest Dragonfly DAC, no subwoofer

I'm really looking for a warm, "hifi" type sound

i have the space for both bookshelf speakers on the desktop or towers to the sides of the desk

also, fyi, being in Canada, shipping rates and related fees can vary greatly, eg, the Pioneer SP-FS52's from Parts Express at $256 for the pair would cost me $500 to my door,

totally open to buying used but my preference there is usually local used as opposed to Audiogon

my short list is as follows,

-Pioneer SP-FS52's
-Philharmonic Philharmonitors
-Tekton M-Lores
-B&W 685,684,683
-KEF Q300
-Swan d2.1se's
-Swan diva towers
-Dana 640i's
-ARX A5's

all advice/suggestions much appreciated

It's probably a personal preference, but the speakers on your list may be a bit much for desktop/nearfield listening. It may be in your best interest to audition speakers in this class to determine for yourself prior to purchase.

Here's my current setup:

Sonus Faber Venere 1.5's powered by a dayton audio APA-150 amp, music from my mac mini via usb DragonFly streamed on MOG. It sounds awesome! The wall of sound is about 2 feet in front of your face...just really really cool. What's better is that the speakers are wide, given how close you sit, so you get an almost 3D effect, with the soundstage still projected in the center for voices, etc.

I've had paradigm shift A2's and Audioengine A5's in a similar setup (without the dayton audio amp, of course), and I'd be lying if I said I noticed a MASSIVE improvement moving up to the Venere's. They are better, yes, but even those powered monitors sounded pretty darn good. If you MUST have passive, bookshelf speakers, by all means go for it. Just don't dismiss powered monitors. You can get some excellent sound for $500.

FYI, the M-Lores might take a while, as Eric at Tekton tends to get backed up. Also, if you go desktop instead of floorstanding, you'll want isolation stands of some sort to lift them off the desk.

The Sonus Faber's are the same price locally as KEF LS50's.....both outside my price range

I may try and audition both with my amp though just for the hell of it

auditioned dynaudio dm's and their higher end wireless line....too sterile for me

Almost all you list here...are excellent choices. If your looking for warm I would point you to KEF, Swan / Dana and the Pioneers just from what I have read. Phil's are very neutral, B&W are over priced... that is my opinion of course...

Since you seem to be looking at Swan, Dana and Arx I would post in those forums and see what they recommend. They can give you a wealth of information.

-Pioneer SP-FS52's
-Philharmonic Philharmonitors
-Tekton M-Lores
-B&W 685,684,683
-KEF Q300
-Swan d2.1se's
-Swan diva towers
-Dana 640i's
-ARX A5's

Of course PSB is a Canadian company, and has many dealers in Canada, and apparently Canadian dealers can discount them somewhat.

A pair of PSB Image B6 speakers would do the trick.

There is a dealer locator for Canada on their website.

The KEF Q300 is another good choice.

IMO B & W speakers are way overpriced, and mostly not very good until you get into their VERY expensive models.

Yes, I know they were outside, but I was just showing you that speakers/small amps work well (I wasn't specifically suggesting the Venere's as an option).

I still suggest powered monitors for your budget.

Since you will be listening in a near-field environment I would be inclined to go with book shelf monitors. I think the Philharmonitor would be a decent fit although the speaker is a bit on the large side. The B&W 685s and the KEF Q300s are great speakers but probably not the best for near-field use. Have you considered the Pioneer BS22 book shelf speaker instead of the FS52 tower?

I think pro studio monitors like KRK, M-Audio and Behringer are a good option as desktop speakers. I am sure the Adam Audio F7 are very good.

That's what I said. I'll be caught singing karaoke to Justin Bieber before a pair of B&W 685s (or any of the OP's choices) are less than 1m from my ears biggrin.gif

Emp Tek E41 is my next desktop speaker (with a small sub under desk), which have been getting rave reviews.

What about the Ascend Sierra-1s? You can get B-stocks for $790+36 ship to Canada.

Also the Swan D2.1SEs are pretty big, you might want to consider their smaller sibling the 1.1s, they are cheaper too.

I think studio monitors make a lot of sense for your listening scenario. I wouldn't say the BS22s have no bass. They extend to 55 Hz which isn't terrible. No book shelf speaker is going to provide that much output in the lower frequencies if you think about it. A subwoofer is really needed if you want that sub 30-40 Hz extension.

Lol. That's saying a lot actually. Listening to Justin Bieber would be complete torture.
