Hey all,

looking to upgrade current Mirage Os2 based 5.1 system. It sits in a room of around 18 x 24 x 9 with a 30% music 70% HT use. It's open to a larger kitchen and hallway on the shorter side (no door). I don't crank it up that often but like to put the system through it's paces when the family is out and about occasionally. I currently have an Onkyo 809 and SVS PB-10NSD I'll be pairing this up with. I like the Mirage and the huge soundstage but sometimes it feels like the localization is just too diffused to really pull you into music and movies.

Currently looking to upgrade the fronts and centers and possibly the rears as well if the price is right. I'm trying to keep the budget to < $1500 as value is pretty high on my list of concerns as I still have kids college funds yelling for attention.

I saw the thread on the emptek vs arx vs htd which was great job by the poster and good feedback from all. Just curious if anyone had any strong thoughts on the ARX A5 vs HTD Level 3 towers and especially how they compare with the Focal Chorus 814v that A4L has been running for a while. I've really liked what I've seen from the ARX in researching them but just trying to see what other options are out there, as those have a pretty small community of users so far sounds like (they seem to love them though).

Prices for the LCR would be within a few hundred bucks of each other so just curious what the community thought of each of these options or if there are others that might be in that same ballpark?

The best tower speakers you can buy for $1300 are the PSB Image T6 speakers.

If you don't believe it read the articles on them in Stereophile and The Absolute Sound.

They both said that they are their reference speakers in that price class.

I had them for two years, before upgrading to some more expensive speakers, and they are very good in every respect.

You can actually get them new for around $1050 from Saturday Audio with full factory warranty.

Well the Arx and HTD would both fit your budget very nicely. The Focal in A4less doesn't seem to have any matching bookshelfs or surround models so if your wanting a 5-7 channel setup the Focals might not be the best choice. But i'm sure the Focals are awesome sounding speakers, the car audio stuff is great but I have no experience with the home audio stuff.

I have the Arx A5s and I think they are some of the best value out there, although not the only great value but definitely deserve to be on most peoples short list for towers under $1500.

Focal is a car speaker company that has very few home audio products, and very limited distribution and support for their home audio products.

I would advise you to stay away from Focal until they start making more of a commitment to home audio products.

They have 7 lines of speakers ranging from $1000 pair to well into 6 figure Utopia towers. $100,000 plus.

Heres your beloved Stereophile, asking if Focal Utopia's are the best speakers in the world. http://www.stereophile.com/rmaf2008/101408focalbest/index.html Don't know how well a pair of 500lb + towers would work in a car audio setup. rolleyes.gif

You know you can push your preferred brand without looking like and idiot in the process. Oh and theres 13 Focal dealers in Southern California alone, ranging from Studio monitors, Headphones/PC Desktop, Car Audio, Hometheater, Custom install.

I know this thread is a bit old, but which are better performers, sound quality wise, for large/open space >5500 cubic ft?

ARX A3rx C, AX5

ARX c center

ARX Ab1 bookshelfs

or

Focal Chorus 716V LE

Focal Chorus cc701 center

Focal Chorus 705b bookshelfs

Admittedly, the ARX specs read better. But do Focals produce higher quality sound? What qualitative differences you can think of.

I plan to buy the towers first to go with Denon AVR-3313CI I found for $709 and SVS SP12 NSD outlet for $699

Later will add center and rears.

THanks for your expert opinions

I ended up getting the arx a5 and run them with an a1b as a center and an SVS pb10-nsd along with mirage os3 rears. The a2 center is finally in stock and should be shipping around end of the month. I'm running mine with an onkyo 809 in a relatively open ~3000 ft cubic room.

I have to say I am completely in love with these. They bring just an amazing amount of realism to music, tv/games and movies. The dialog with even the bookshelf as center was really eye opening. I have been caught several times looking for my phone when it was a phone ringing in the background of a tv show or football broadcast booth. Im very excited to see how much better it will be with the new improved a2 center.

For the price point I think you will be hard pressed to find such a refined speaker. I don't crank them that often but they definitely can fill the room and the sq doesnt suffer when blasting away. The towers have a surprisingly rich low end for this pricepoint. Music that isn't too bass heavy sounds great in pure mode. The soundstage is very wide and clear. It has really shown how good (or bad) some of my source recordings are.

The focal seem to have good reviews but I am very glad I took a flyer on the Arx.

Hts had a great shootout where both of these where run for stereo setup. Lots of good info on them and similar ones in the thread.

I never pulled the trigger on the focals. If the arx weren't what I wanted I settled on the HTD level 3 as my backup but once I got the arx in I was done looking. I really wanted to try out the ribbons as had heard some higher end ones and really enjoyed them. The hts shootout is a long thread but really gteat info on a variety of sub-$1k models. Great thread for anyone looking in this range.

AngelaB just as fyi there is a member over at the tai forum selling their full 5.0 arx setup for a great price. If your not averse to used its a really good deal. I would take those savings and put it towards either a second sub or a little beefier one. In that large of a space a sb12 may be a little less than you want for booming HT use. A second sub would be helpful for evening out the response across the space.
