Between Audioengine A2 / A5+ and Emotiva Airmotiv 4 / 5, I'd have to the Airmotiv sound better, to me, mainly because of the ribbon tweeter. The Airmotiv are a bit more expensive than Audioengine, so the cost difference may not warrant one over the other. The Airmotiv are rear-ported, so you'll need some space between the wall and speaker so they can breathe.
If you have a Guitar Center within reach, you can demo M-Audio and KRK powered speakers.
At any rate, ANYTHING mentioned in this thread, except for Blose, will be 10x better than any "computer" speaker from the usual sources, like Creative, Logitech, and Altec-Lansing. Been there, done that.
Oh. I have the Emotiva Airmotiv 5's and ran a pair of Acoustic Research AR570 powered monitors for 18 years prior to that. Nothing wrong with the AR570's and they blew the cones off of anything Creative and Logitech could offer up. I just wanted something different and a little more suited to studio work. The AR570's are up on Craigslist for $130.
