Unless you have some experience I might recommend going to an audio store and comparing sealed and ported subs. My personal preference is sealed for music, and I agree with cel, the SB-1000 is adequate for your room. Unless you're a dubstep or electronic music nut the output is less important than accuracy, but then that's just my opinion.

Hmm, this is an interesting review. I don't know Jim Wilson's credentials other than what I've learned from his posts here. In most cases the PB trumped the SB in music listening, with the SB lacking "heft", "punch", "impact" that the PB seemed to provide.

OK, I'm back in town and am anxious to get things going. I think I have things narrowed down. I'll most likely go with the svs SB1000 for the sub. For the bookshelves I'm considering these options and am hoping to audition two or three:

swan D2.1se+ $549
Aperion Grand Verus Bookshelf $629 open box or $699 new
NHT Classic Two's $529
KEF Q300 $469

Does anyone have any further thoughts about these options to help me narrow it down? I haven't heard anyone mention the Aperions, but have read good reviews.

Bump and update:

I'm leaning away from the KEF's mainly because of aesthetics and lack of being able to audition them.

I'd like to try the Swans, but if I end up returning them I'd be on the hook for shipping both ways.

That leaves me with the NHT's and the Aperion's. The Aperion's would be risk free and NHT's would only be one way shipping if I don't go with those. Unless anyone has any other thoughts, I think that's where I will start.

In the last 6mo I bought this system:

Outlaw LFM-1 Plus (12" downfiring ported sub), $500 (promotion at time)
Cambridge S30 bookshelf, $220 (always are)
Sanus EF28B Stands, $43

Not necessarily a recommendation, but a comment that I am very happy with this system for music.

The small speakers on stands don't have a big physical presence. The large sub is forgotten by now.

I'm looking at upgrading my bookshelves as well. I can't find any retailer local that has the KEF's in stock. I have been leaning towards ordering the Classico 2 mini monitors from Gallo - free shipping both ways, and see how they sound.

For a new sub, the HSU VTF-3 is a monster but I think I have a spot for it.

HSU package deals are tempting too.

Anyone have any input into the smaller HSU subs such as the VTF-1?

I would go with the SVS PB-1000 over the HSU VTF-1. Better rated lower extension.

Out of those I would go for the Swans. There's an older review floating around somewhere where the Swans were in a test with NHT Classic 3s, Ascend Acoustics Sierras and some others (I think). From what I remember the Swans were preferred by the most.

They're more in the $1000-$1200 price range in sound and looks. So at $549 they're a steal IMO.

Klipsch RF-62II, RC-500, RS-400, SVS PC12+,
Def Tech SC8000
Harman Kardon AVR 1600
PS3, Apple TV, Sharp 70" Qattron

I agree, of the choices on that list, I'd suggest the Swan D2.1 SE+ as well, but actually, it wasn't the NHT Classic Threes they were compared too at that GTG, it was the Classic Twos. BIG difference there, but the Swans won that match-up even though they were intentionally wired out of phase.

What you're referring to starts on page 4 right here.

Of course, it was later vehemently protested by fans of one particular ID brand as being flawed.

In actuality, it was the most well done GTG I've ever read about here in that it was both double blind as well as level matched.

I've heard them, and the D2.1SE+ really is a lot speaker for the money! I'd like to hear the upgraded custom version.
