I am planning to purchase a Yamaha RX-V673. I was told to post here to get speaker suggestions.

I have a living room that is roughly 14 feet deep. I am hoping to find a decent set of 5.1 speakers for less than $400 USD. If I can get a decent 7.1 set for a little over $500, I would be interested in that too.

Any recommendations would be great, and thanks for the help!

Two sets I am looking at are:

$399 - Energy 5.1 Take Classic Home Theater System (Set of Six, Black)

$349 - Energy RC-Micro 5.1 Surround Speaker System (Black)

I have read/heard that Energy is a good set for the money

Thanks for pointing that out. I was actually reading about it while you posted.

From what I can tell though, they have been sued, and I am not sure if/when they will have more speakers of that model (9774) to sell. Their site says 4/17/13, so 2 weeks. Their Amazon storefront page doesn't have a date though.

It is $248 (plus shipping) from their site, and Amazon had it listed at 278 (with shipping I believe). Not sure if it is worth waiting 2 weeks to see if they will keep selling them.

The Pioneer Andrew Jones entry models are in that price range, and they are very well regarded:

http://www.avsforum.com/t/1278774/pioneers-speaker-genius-hits-low-price-point/3960

(Except for the subwoofer. Most say to just get the speakers seperately and get a BIC F12.)

Are you talking about this set http://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-SP-FS52-LR-Designed-standing-Loudspeaker/dp/B008NCD2S4

Looking like $426 without a subwoofer (assuming 2 towers, 2 bookshelf, one center).

If I add the BIC 12 at $218.

I am looking at $644 or 5.1, which is well outside $500 unfortunately. Any other suggestions, or maybe cheaper places to buy from?

My post got filtered or something originally.

If so, it is about $426 for 2 towers, 2 bookshelves, and 1 center speaker. When I add in the BIC F12 at $218. I am looking at $644 dollars for 5.1. That is outside what I was trying to shoot for with $400-500. Are there cheaper places to buy these items that you can recommend to meet my price point?

This Jamo set:

Plus a BIC-F12:

http://www.parts-express.com/pe/pshowdetl.cfm?&Partnumber=303-436&scqty=1

That would be one option.

Going to sound lame, but everything I have in the room is black. What color would you say Wenge is? Brown? Grey?

That is a cheap price for those speakers. I would rather have those now and wait six months or year to buy the sub, over getting the Jamos now with a sub, if it were me.

^This. You could start with 5.0 then add the sub later.

Or perhaps start with a 2.1 setup first then add the rest as you have more money later.

Or if you want the 5.1 right away, you could forgo the floorstanders and run all bookshelves. That would be in your range.

This set is worth considering. I have the Mordaunt Short Carnival 2 that I really like. Great speakers.

Does anyone know if the Monoprice 9774's are coming back into stock or does anyone know how I can get my hands on them?

I did, but I wonder about the accuracy of the date. I was particularly wondering if they were even going to release it anytime soon because of the lawsuit from Energy....I tried customer service but didn't get anything definitive.

consider some BIC DV62's with a FH6-LCR center...would still be competitive if cost was tripled. You can add a $100 Polk sub.

I wouldn't mess with the systems where you need a sub to kick in at 120hz.

Yeah, when I talked to customer service 2 weeks ago, they said that is the rough date. In short they supplied no info, other than that is a guesstimate and not a guarantee. :/

I'd have no problem going other routes, but I have very limited knowledge on speakers/systems. I just bought a new house that has jacks for 5.1....I also have a sun room that has two speaker wires that go the the same jacks in the living room, which I think makes it 7.1. My new Panasonic plasma has horrible speakers and I'd like to spend somewhere between 300-400 in speakers and 200-250 on a receiver. I've scoured Craigslist looking different speakers, but I don't know which speakers can be combined correctly to have a sufficient surround sound system....like combining 2 polk satellites with 2 bookshelf Sony's. I read on CNET that the Energy and Monoprice speakers are great for their value and make it easy for me to choose them because they are bundled.

Could I get four BIC DV62's, a FH6-LCR center, and a sub? Would that work out fine? Also, what sub would you recommend?

Polk psw10 is only one I know regularly around $100 and still good. More options between $150-250 especially when sales hit.

I use the DV62's and FH6-LCR and love'em. The FH6 blends just fine with the 62's which some people worry about since the FH6 has a horn. The 62's are actually a bit brighter brand new.

The only thing I have found better with some speakers in the $400+ per pair is imaging with high quality music files. Imaging is still very good but not as good if being super picky and you have good hearing. Reproduction accuracy and sensitivity from 60hz-20khz is big strengths of the BIC bookshelfs and centers. They hit 40hz but not really like you get with a tower or sub.

I just finished Super 8 with newish Yamaha receiver at -25 volume and could feel the couch rumble with 4 62's and a FH6 - my BIC sub is off being demo'd by family.

For $100 the Parts Express Dayton 12" sub is better than the Polk PSW-10 if you can wait a week for it to come back in stock.

Thanks guys, I'm going to go with four BIC DV62's, a FH6-LCR center, and the sub from Dayton. I appreciate the feedback! Also, I saw the 9774's were pushed back to 5/30/13....I wouldn't doubt they get pushed back again...

Why would you go with bookshelf speakers from one series and then a center from a different series? Get all 3 front speaker from the same series. The DV62s and the FH6-LCR won't sound anything alike. You should either get the DV series all across the front or get the Formula series across the front. The horn loaded tweeter will sound totally different than the other tweeter making your front soundstage sound odd.

That's one of the questions I was asking a few posts above...I'll look into it. So the back speakers can be different than the three fronts?

+1! I had a PSW-10 for a bit and I was not impressed at all. Very boomy, flabby and sloppy bass. The Dayton is much better for the price.

Yes. The surrounds are mostly just for fill in effects so it won't be so noticeable. Ideally they should be the same, but its not nearly as important as having the front three match.

You can't tell a difference when a sound pans across, I checked it many times in the first couple months and sound is much more important to me than picture. I can hear HE lightbulbs from 15ft away.

The horn just makes it more efficient with the FH6 series, its not like a Klipsch or other horn. The 62's start off brighter and then become basically identical in a week or so.
