Hi all,

My fiance and I are looking for a small, good-looking and also powerful system mainly to be used for TV/ Music/Movies (50/25/25).

I am thinking about buying Focal Dome Pack 2.1 with a Marantz NR 1603 receiver.
The room size is 12.5 by 32 feet.

Would you recommend this setup or offer something around the same price point? And if I go with this setup, what center speaker would you recommend?

Thanks

Asking two 4 inch midrange drivers and a 8 inch subwoofer to fill a room that size might be asking alot! Do you require small form factor speakers? For the 1,500 dollars (the price of the focal dome) you could get a pair of ascend acoust cmt340s and a kick ass svs sub!

Set up #1: EMP e5ti, e5Ci, and SLS Q line Audio surrounds, EMP 10i10i sub
Set up #2: Def Tech SM450, CLR2002, SLS Qline surrounds and Klipsch 12wD sub
Set up #3: JBL130, JBL120C and Klipsch synergy sub

Agreed.

Those small speakers will not fill that room very well at all. Those speakers and that sub are definitely not powerful enough.

If you can convince the fiance and have the room, at least go for larger bookshelves with larger drivers. I'll second Ascend Acoustics. Even the CBM-170 SEs bookshelves would be an improvement. Then the SVS PB12-NSD would be awesome for your room: http://www.audioholics.com/reviews/speakers/subwoofers/pb12-nsd

+1 on the recommended Ascend/SVS set ups.

If small speaker size is that important there are a couple of options, but neither are in that price range.

I don't have any experience with the combination that you are considering but I have a ton of experience with the Domes. Although your question is fair, it is also almost impossible to answer. Your definition of "fill up" or "powerful" may differ from mine or anyone else's. That being said, serious consideration must be made when pairing electronics with Focal Dome. While they will sound fine with many lower powered receivers and integrateds, if given ample high quality upstream electronics they will flat out perform.

If you are looking for a small form factor, stylish looks, and performance they are hard to beat. If you are looking for cinema sized output in a largish room you may want to look at floorstanders like the Focal 826V or 836V.

Thank for all the responses.
Style and size matter b/c of the fiance (you know how that discussion goes with them smile.gif)

I have narrowed my search down to 3 sets. I will be buying the Marantz NR1603 receiver:

1) Focal Dome 2.1
Center - Focal Chorus CC 700 V Edition

2) Focal Dome 2.0
Center - Focal Chorus CC 700 V Edition
Sub - SVS SB12 (or Focal Chorus SW 700 V)

3) Paradigm Milleniaone 2.0
Center - Paradigm SE Center
Sub - SVS SB12 (or Paradigm MilleniaSub for the looks)

Which setting would you recommend?
If Paradigm, can you recommend a better center speaker?

The SVS SB12 would be far superior to the 8" 100 watt sub in that Focal 2.1 set in terms of output.

+1 on the SVS SB12 sub.

Here is another satellite speaker you might consider - the Gallo Strada 2. It's a little pricier than the Focal dome but will easily fill your room with sound. It is shelf or wall mountable.

Not sure how the CA minx compared with the focal dome speakers, but another small, easily wall mountable speaker that might get the WAF (or in this case fiance approval factor)

Set up #1: EMP e5ti, e5Ci, and SLS Q line Audio surrounds, EMP 10i10i sub
Set up #2: Def Tech SM450, CLR2002, SLS Qline surrounds and Klipsch 12wD sub
Set up #3: JBL130, JBL120C and Klipsch synergy sub

All of those tiny speakers are totally inadequate for that room size. You will find out the hard way and waste time and money going that route.

It will be an expensive and bitter lesson. The wife will not look very kindly on you totally wasting $1500, so you had better educate her.

The idea that you can fill a room that size with adequate sound with a pair of 4" speakers is just plain silly; it ain't gonna happen unless the laws of physics are repealed.

I suggest that you start with a pair of the Focal Chorus 706V speakers, which you can get from Music Direct for $499 right now.

Add the 700CC speaker for the center and you will have some very nice speakers that CAN do the job.

Anything smaller is a total waste of money.

A 12-inch sub with adequate power will be needed of course; the Klipsch RW-12 is around $400 and would be a good possibility.

The rear/surround speakers are not particularly critical.

Commysman, I agree and disagree...

Will the focal dome or other small speakers fill the room? No (as pointed out by many early in the thread)
But since the Misses wants small, unobtrusive speakers, maybe the relevant question is...
Will the focal dome or other small speakers be a huge improvement over TV speakers ? I think the anwer is a definative-YES!

+1

I think the Focal or the Paradigms would both be a good starter set in that journey (it might take years) of eventually persuading the soon to be wife that bigger speakers are better. smile.gif
