In my case, the Audioengine A2 speakers have a 3.5mm stereo input jack and that connects to the PC sound output jack via the supplied cable which has 3.5mm plugs.
There is also a pair of RCA jacks on the left speaker which are just wired directly in parallel with the 3.5mm input, so I ran an RCA cable from there to the subwoofer input.
Unless the room is pretty large or you are going to play very loud, the subwoofer you have may be adequate.
I would just use it and see how it works.
If you need a more powerful one you can deal with that later.
To stop the cord from falling out you might just take a small piece of paper or thin cardboard and insert it alongside the connector to make it fit tighter.
