You need to provide a lot more info. Your original post needs more description.

How many speakers are you looking for?

What equipment do you already have?

What does "other external sources" mean?

how big is the room?

What type of speakers? Floorstanding? Bookshelf?

Thanks for the info. But i dont know ANYTHING about sound systems. I would probably like small speakers that you could sit 3-5 feet away from. would bigger speakers mean better quality?

I would like 2 speakers. I need speakers that i can connect cds or my iphone too. Does it sound like im clueless?

can anyone give a run-down on sound systems? That would be really helpful. I am talking about the specs and stuff.

Try reading and helping yourself instead of making multiple posts for the same thing.

If you have no clue on the basics of audio, you should start now!

If all you want is a simple 2 channel system to connect to your existing CD player/iPhone you can go with a pair of Infinity Primus P363 towers and a simple 2 channel amp.

Amp:
http://www.amazon.com/Pyle-2x75W-Stereo-Power-Amplifier/dp/B001P2R1RW/ref=sr_1_8?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1366936015&sr=1-8&keywords=Stereo+amplifier

Speakers:
http://www.frys.com/ShopCartServlet?purchase=6878376&site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG

Both are free shipping and should come in under $200 pre-tax.

Many many options depending on your needs. This is just one.

For $200 your best bet to get something haflway decent is to go with used gear. Craigslist ususally has some decent stuff if your willing to looks. As for the silver bullet of whats the best setup for $200 thats not something that can really be answered. If it was me I would look for a older receiver that cost someone $500 new that they want to sell cheap and the same with a set of speakers. They dont have to be new to sound good especially if your looking for a stereo setup. Getting into HT surround sound AV is a different story.

The Infinity P363 towers are $117 each! Don't see how you can get two towers and the Pyle amp for under $200.

Doh! That's what I get for trying to rush answers while working. Thanks for catching that.

Fry's did run a special on the second generation Andrew Jones Pioneer towers just this last week for ~$150 a pair. That would have been a decent setup as well. I agree with lemonslush who recommended going used, but that will require you do a lot of homework and knowing what you will be getting as there will not be a return policy. You'll get more for your money, but the potential for getting burned with no recourse will be higher.
