Looking for a new receiver and speaker setup. I can get the Onkyo HT 9400 htib on Amazon for $775 with free shipping. It has great reviews for the price. I just want to know if I can get something better for close to this price by buying separately. I don't even need 7.1, I will be fine with 5.1, since my couch is against the back wall anyway. I don't want huge tower speakers, mine will be wall mounted. The smaller the better, as long as they still sound good. Any thing out there that I should look at?

I posted this setup in another thread. It says the sale ended yeseerday but on my screen its still active.

JBL Studio 130 bookshelves 130/pair x2
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16882665156

JBL Studio 120c center 80ea.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16882665158

As for the sub i would wait for the klipsch rw12d to go on sale for $300 or less.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16882780078

When it comes to the avr there are a lot of options. If you wanted to keep costs down look at this denon 1612 for $190.

If you can spend a bit more go for the denon 2112. It offers more power per channel and has an upgraded room correction software.
http://www.accessories4less.com/make-a-store/item/DENAVR2112CI/DENON-AVR-2112CI-7.1-Integrated-Network-A/V-Surround-Receiver/1.html

The first system will run $830. The upgraded avr is 180 more bringing the total to $1010.

This system even with the inexpensive avr will wipe the floor with that onkyo system. Happy hunting.

Just a few weeks back newegg.com had the 9400THX on sale for $599 w/ free shipping... At that price no you can't do better, THX certified speakers, sub, and receiver.... Also you said you don't need 7.1 but you could do 7.1 with front height speakers as the 9400THX has Dolby PLIIz.

As far as what Petden stated, I have never heard those speakers so I can't comment. But I have heard the Onkyo speakers and they are very good speakers for HTIB. They sound good, pretty crisp and clean too.

The JBL speaker pairs are $179 now at newegg. Do they go on sale a lot? Should I wait, or will I be waiting for a really long time?

For $20 more I can get the 2113CI. Is there much of a difference?

Hsu Research HB-1 MK2 package
http://www.hsuresearch.com/products/speakerpkg.html

Maybe a bit pricy but they are of high quality. Their speakers are known to put out tonnes of bass. Settle for these temporarily and add a sub later when you want to upgrade smile.gif

How much you looking to spend? You sure can get a pretty good reciever for less than 775! It is often recommended that you spend 2-3 times the cost of the reciever on speakers!

Set up #1: EMP e5ti, e5Ci, and SLS Q line Audio surrounds, EMP 10i10i sub
Set up #2: Def Tech SM450, CLR2002, SLS Qline surrounds and Klipsch 12wD sub
Set up #3: JBL130, JBL120C and Klipsch synergy sub

I'm sure those are nice, but way beyond what I'm willing to spend. I'm thinking $500-$700 for 5.1 speakers. $400-$500 for the receiver. I'm very close to getting a Denon 2113 refurb, just want to look into it a little more before I pick that one. I can get the speakers later and just use my old cheap speakers for now.

Great speakers for sure...good bass for their size, but I would not say "tons" of it.

Newegg has the klipsch sub for $280 right now, I just ordered it. Also got a Denon 2113 refurb. Now I need to either wait for those JBLs to go on sale, or get something else. Was thinking of these Pioneers: http://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-SP-BS22-LR-Designed-Bookshelf-Loudspeakers/dp/B008NCD2LG

Thats a good price on the sub. I think youll be quite happy with it. I havent heard the pioneers so im not sure how good they are. People agree that they are one of the best values at that price point, which doesnt mean they sound good, just better than most at that price.

That's a great sub and receiver. The Pioneers would be a good match smile.gif

Found these on craigslist for a total of $300. Probably much better than the JBLs. Only problem is one blown woofer I will have to replace.

Here's where I'm at now.

Denon 2113 arriving in a day or two - $368 refurb.
klipsch rw12d in the mail - $268 from newegg

Scored two klipsch RF-3 II fronts and one RC-3 II from craigslist for $250 total! One woofer is blown, but otherwise they look almost new. I will replace that speaker as soon as possible.

http://www.klipsch.com/rc-3-ii-center-speaker

Just need some surrounds. I'm determined to find some klipsch RS speakers at a good price to match the set. Maybe I'll just spend the extra money on a new pair since I saved so much on the others.

If it is just the driver that is blown, you might be able to get a replacement driver from Klipsch. Some manufacturers do carry replacements back 8 or 10 years. Or watch Ebay for another driver.

Also, try here: http://reconingspeakers.com/products-page/brands/klipsch-rf3-k-1083-8-woofer/. According to the page you linked to, your driver has part # K-1083-SB. Could be that's a match.

I haven't been able to really listen yet to see how bad the speaker is. My denon is not here yet and all I have is my 12 year old cheap htib Panasonic receiver. It's way too underpowered for these speakers.
