Hi all,

In the middle of setting up my first audio system, and am looking for suggestions/advice on a pair of floor-standing speakers.

I reside n New Zealand and don't have the luxury of going out to demo speakers. I'd have to fly to different cities.

My budget is around 5k US.

I'm running a Bel Canto DAC 2.5 straight into a Plinius SA Reference, so no worries about amplification (got a deal on the Plinius, living in NZ has its perks I guess).

I mostly listen to electronic - Drum & Bass, House, Dubstep, anything really. Also Jazz, classical, and old pop/rock.

My room measure 5m x 7m (16f x 23f).

Generally I swing to the lush/laid-back/warm side, and as such had my eyes set on a pair of Sonus Faber Venere 3.0s. I'm just not sure if they'll deliver in the bass department to suit my electronic needs.

I'd prefer to keep things simple with just the floor standers. No sub.

Anyways, here's what I've been looking at. Any feedback much appreciated.

Sonus Faber Venere 3.0 (I'll be able to demo these in a few weeks)
KEF R900 (Dual 8 inch woofers are appealing, and only read good things about mids/highs)
ProAc D18 (These are the only speakers I've heard. Very nice! Assuming I can get even more bass with something like the KEF)
PSB Synchrony One (Could get these in for a demo. Have read they're very flat. Some say boring, no 'wow' factor?)

Thanks in advance

Dennis makes great speakers too, Im not sure how much shipping would be but I would consider the Philharmonic 3's. In the right room they have useful bass down to 20hz which is extremely impressive considering it doesnt have a built in sub. The only downfall is that they are rather low sensitivity however they are built with very good quality drivers and should be able to handle everything your amp can offer. You'll see there is an owners thread on AVS as well. The 3's as Dennis said is a "stand-alone music producer". He intended these to be run full range and i think you would like the sound.

Thanks for your reply Petden.

I've skimmed over the name, but never checked Philharmonics out.

They look really good! Especially the 'slim' prototypes Dennis has rustled up. The Philharmonic 1,2,3 are not exactly lookers...

Definitely another contender.

Thanks for that wink.gif

I like the looks. Everyone agrees that they are built like tanks though so i suppose there is something to be said about that. These internet direct companies can offer some amazing deals.

Ended up with Usher Mini Dancer 2s. Great speakers! Would still like to audition the Sonus Faber Venere 3.0 just out of curiosity, but would be surprised if I ever gave these up.

ps. It's not recommended to plug a Bel Canto (and other) digital/pre/DAC straight into a Plinius power amp. Plinius power amps are DC coupled, and as such, amplify any DC at the output stage of the DAC. My Bel Canto was faulty and outputting x10 more DC than it should have been in 1 channel, which in turn cooked a friends driver. Damn it! I purchased a Plinius pre amp to get around this issue, and swapped out the DAC for another brand.

I love the looks, sound not too shabby either smile.gif

I'd like to hear those Ushers some day, I've read they're fantastic.
