I have an old pair of Boston Acoustic A60 series II speakers, which are currently blown. At some point, I'd like to do something with them so I'll ask a couple questions. 1) I've looked around and can't seem to find replacement woofers for these. May need to replace the tweeters as well. Anyone know where I can find replacements? 2) These speakers have the clip style jacks on the back. Would I be able to attach these to a receiver/stereo with no clip jacks? 3) Is it worth it? 4) How would these perform with newer speaker models (such as B&W 685s, for instance)?

Marantz PMD350U CD/cassette player

1. At this point there not worth very much but you can get a pair of tweeters here for cheap.

2. Yes, you can connect bare wire to the spring clips. Pretty much all receivers accept bare wire. What receiver do you have?

3. It is worth it? I don't think so. the woofers are notorious for needing refoaming.

Just one replacement woofer cost $44.

You could buy this guys old A60's for $80.

4. You could buy some more current speakers for cheap, especially if you shop places like Craigslist. You don't need to spend B&W money.

I used to own A70's in the late 80's early 90's. sold them to a friend in 2000. Not long after that they needed refoaming and he never got them to sound the same again.

Is refoaming a pain to do correctly? My receiver is a RX-V1065. I have speakers set up now, but I was just asking in case I felt like adding these on at some point, or making a cheap-o system for another room. Definitely don't want to spend much $$ on this stuff.

I dunno, I let my friend refoam the speakers. Looks easy but never tried it myself.

the Yamaha RX-V1065 accepts bare wire. Unscrew the terminals a little and you can see where to insert the bare wire. Or just use banana plugs on the receiver and bare wire on the Boston Speakers. Nothing wrong with that.

I've purchased so many used speakers for cheap it isn't worth it to me to fix those Bostons.

I bought a pair of these locally for $40 and I'm pretty confident they're as good as your A60's.

Probably a lot better right now smile.gif. Thanks for the info. Just thought I'd ask, as they're just taking space in my basement.

Perhaps I'll just pick up a refoaming kit if I can find it cheap enough, and go from there.

There's lots of Boston refoaming kits on ebay in the $10-$15 range.

In your original post you said you need replacements woofers. Does that mean all they need is to be refoamed?

I'll probably try to refoam first and go from there. Not sure if they're actually blown to the point of full replacement. A buddy gave them to me before he moved. They were in his basement for years. Now they're in mine smile.gif.

Ok, so I've ordered the foam surrounds and glue kit to fix these A60's. Now if I'm able to fix them, and they work, I'm thinking of building a cheap but quality system in my bedroom (13' X 13' X 7'). Haven't looked at subs yet, but I'll want wireless hookup (Rocketfish?). I'm also planning on capping my sub budget at less than or equal to $200. For a receiver, I saw a Pioneer VSX-522k for under $200. Is this a good receiver? Also will eventually be hooking up my older (2009 or so) 40" Sony Bravia LCD TV, and a BD player, and Roku box. I'm open to all sorts of suggestions. Will probably run 2.1, but will want the option to expand. Thanks.
