So I've decided to buy a Denon 1612 and was wondering if the Onkyo HT690 would be a good speaker set to buy. Was hoping to spend less than $300 on speakers and was hoping to get a 5.1 speaker system.

Let me know your thoughts. Thanks!

I would stay away from that and look to spend $400-500 minimum for a decent budget set up.

400-500 on the speakers? And no I haven't bought the receiver yet. I was looking to spend ~$500 on the receiver and speakers if possible

How many speakers do you actually want? 5.1? do you just want bookshelf size speakers? How big is the room?

And where are you located?

Definitely do not get the Onkyo HT690. Those speakers have a sensitivity of 79db. You'll have to turn the volume way up to make them as loud as a 90db speaker.

Well I currently have a 7.1 but my roommate is taking it when he moves out in a week. I've been reading on here that a 7.1 isn't that much better than a 5.1 for a budget system. The room is roughly 15x12.

The speaker size to me isn't a huge deal. Really just the money right now is the issue.

Not sure what you can get for $300, but if you can increase your budget to ~$355, IMO a good way to proceed would be to start with:
- a pair of well-rated Cambridge S30s ($219, shipped, at Amazon.com); and
- a Dayton Audio SUB-1200 subwoofer ($119 + $15 shipping, at Parts-Express.com).

Then save up for a matching CC speaker and surrounds (or for three new speakers across the front, and use the S30s for surround duty).

you can get this Jamo 5.0 setup for $179 and then buy a subwoofer for $100-120 from Parts Express.

http://www.amazon.com/Jamo-426-HCS-WENGE-5-Piece/dp/B003GGXGU6/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1369755074&sr=8-2&keywords=jamo+speakers

http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?partnumber=300-628

That's about as good as you're gonna get for $300 for a 5.1 system.
