Hello, new here. I have two speaker boxes with 2 15"speakers in each and I believe they are called horn teeters. I have a pioneer vsx-d514, but it doesn't make the 15" speakers "hit" as hard as my old receiver. Can I use a preamp or anything for just those speakers?

You lost me. Do the boxes also have horn Tweeters? The subs should be powered with their own amp, so the reciever should not make a difference. Did you run the speaker calibration (MCACC)? If the boxes do not have a built in amp, you would need an external amp to power them.

Can you post pictures on this forum? I don't believe there is a separate amp.

Sure you can post photos.

I've never seen a 15" tweeter so I'm actually interested in seeing what this is.

Are these speakers of subs? After reading it, sounds like you have two speakers with dual 15's and horn tweeters? Right. Could be that you AVR does not have the same wattage to power these.

Last receiver I had was a jvc rx6040. Both are 5.1 channel, 500 watt.

I bought a huge setup about ten years ago with these speakers a center and two surrounds. CD player DVD player and the receiver and a stand. Got it from rent way, no issues ever with it and it used to sound amazing. I know people are going to say it's junk our whatever because of where it's from, but it really is a nice setup.

Sorry phone us being difficult......

With the jvc receiver this setup was the loudest I've ever heard. I cannot find that receiver anymore to buy so I had to find something I thought would be as good or better. The 15" speakers look like subwoofers but they have words coming out of them. any way to just have bass coming out?

The tweeter is a compression driver, it is mounted into a 15" round waveguide, much like this one

http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?partnumber=270-310

There's a pretty good chance the tweeter in your speaker is playing down to around 1 khz, given the size of that waveguide.

This speaker should be a 2.5 way, where only the upper woofer is playing to the crossover point, and the lower woofer is rolled off earlier. The woofers almost look like Focal "W" cones, which is a very high quality woofer that could play up to 1 khz. Also a very expensive woofer.

Take a picture of the back. To me it looks like they have their own amp with the LEDs on the front. Can you also take a pic where the writing is clear and legible?

Since they go high enough to work in a 2 way system those are full range woofers, not subwoofers.

I had a similar experience with a pioneer elite receiver recently it sounded very thin, yet my old onkyo was very full and powerful sounding. I sold the pioneer and got an NAD receiver and it was back to the powerful sound and even better quality. I think you found your culprit as you stated your JVC receiver sounded better. If you can take the pioneer back try another brand like onkyo, denon, yamaha etc

There is nothing on the back as far as words. I will pull a speaker and see if there is anything on the back of them. There is just one hookup in the back for all three speakers

You should also pull the waveguide tweeter and see what driver that is.

A picture of the crossover would be nice to see also.

That's definitely a production speaker, not a DIY. Is there anything else written on the front? I'd like to see a close up of that front LED panel.

Those are crossover coils. Leave them alone. FWIW these speakers appear to be of the White Van variety, typical of what's available from rent to own outfits. Those places rent/sell cheap junk, mainly because so many of those who rent them make two or three payments and then disappear, taking the speakers with them. A google search shows no retail stores sell them, but there are quite a few for sale by law enforcement agencies, part of seizures. I guess you could call them Crack House Specials. cool.gif
